I had lunch yesterday at a new place that I'll probably put on my regular rotation of mid-day options in the Gultch. It's Grandma's, located 2 and a half blocks down Av1 from the Del Rey in what used to be the Saprissa store.

The place stradles the line between soda and restaurant. Very clean and simple, with new furnishings and a small, but pretty good, menu. I had Marlin steak with a Carribean sauce, with fries, mixed vegetables and pasta salad. Total cost c2,700. Good value for the money. The marlin was very tasty and the sauce was distinctive. Everything served piping hot.

They offer what they describe as their special Carribean coconut and seafood stew on Saturdays only.

Since the majority of the people working here are from Limon, nearly everyone is bilingual.

I tried the Pescado en salsa caribeno (whole fish in Caribbean sauce)...everything was delicious except the fish. The mackerel was overcooked and sparse. I may give the place another shot...but will try out the chicken.

I visited Grandma's for lunch last week. It was so busy at 12:15 that I walked around the corner and had a few cervezas at Nashville South, then returned about 1:15. Excellent food (I had chicken, which may be the answer if you're nervous about the fish), fast service, a big plate of food for C 2500. I'll be back next trip!

It is west of the HDR. Prior to it being the Saprissa store it was a Subway sandwich shop. It is across from the Pizza Hut in the Omni mall. Avenida 1 and Calle 5 y 3.

I had lunch there yesterday. It's a nice, clean place with a Tico crowd. I had some Marlin with french fries, frijoles and rice, with a diet coke (in the bottle) for 2200 colones. All in all,a very nice lunch for almost no money. I recommend it highly.Even the guys who never leave the Gulch can do the 5 minute walk to this place.
