I'm going on my 8th trip and always wore my Rolex. What do other people do? Has anyone had a problem wearing a good watch?

If you want to keep it, leave it at home. Your putting a target on your back with a Rolex on your wrist.

I wear a casual watch.......Fossil or Citizen....I paid less than $100 for each. I can't believe the stares I get on these,I couldn't imagine wearing a Rolex. Play it safe, try to blend in as much as possible....well...you know what I mean:) We are already a target be it gringo pricing etc.,don't advertise.Nothing blows your day like reading about one of us being a victim of crime or worse! You're doing well in life, good,I'am sure you can find a chica in CR(a 10..9...8..etc.) that will only be to glad to take some of your cash surplus in exchange for a good time :)

Enjoy!

I wore a Rolex for my first 9 or 10 trips to CR, but I didn't go to SJO. Then, I stumbled onto this website. And after reading every thread, and then going to SJO for the 1st time, I decided not to wear it to CR anymore, and I haven't worn it for the past 12 trips. A $50 Timex is all you need.

I walk around San Jose with a 20 dollar Casino watch. Talking about walking around; I once had a chica laugh at me for carrying around $30 dollar phone cell phone. I got robbed of my nice fancy phone one night walking in Sabana Sur. So, don’t worry for not being bling bling in San Jose it will save you some trouble if you are not flashy

I've learned to tell time by using the sun. :P

Listen to MG and Czar and don't bring anything that you don't want stolen. It won't impress the chicas anyway, in fact, it may tell them you are rich and can easily pay CIEN+.

I bought a brand new Casio digital watch on Ebay for $11, and that INCLUDED shipping. 8)

Wish no more  . There are plenty of "genuine" rolex watched being offered for sale in San Jose. Lot of independent "merchants" clustered around plaza de la cultura. If you bargain hard :o you can negotiate the price down to around $50.00  :P  :P

Listen to LV Steve.....
You don't need to impress anyone in CR.... showing wealth only attracts problems for you. Keep a low profile.

Rolex watches are for sale right in front of the DR every day for $35 to $50. Fake, but who cares. I bought one two years ago and it still works great.

Well, I' ll tell you that you've been lucky and should listen to the advice given so far.

I too wore a good watch to CR on my first visit but having watched a tico friend getting robbed at gun point ( at the time, it really didn't seem like they were robbing him, all because if his shitty tico style 10K, as in carat, golden neck chain ) at a crowded open market in Zapote , really made me think twice.

The lost item can be replaced, your life can't. Best not to bling.
