I was stranded on Bolivia's road of death some years back.
The car I was in was operated by a tour guide taking our group of four tourists to the Yungas Valley for lunch and a tour. On the way back to La Paz our car broke down and the driver guide hitched hiked a ride back to La Paz to get another car to retrieve us.
I was with my wife and two female companions from the airline business.
As we were waiting for the tour driver I saw a crude wood cross beside the road which said in Spanish,
"Here on March 12, 1970, Jorge Perez and his twelve passengers died"
Eventually we caught a ride on a jeep full of oranges to the next town where we waited in a cafe until we saw out guide return in a car and flagged him down.
