I'd like to surprise my girl with a new Motorola Razor. She already has a (old and crappy) cell phone, so what kind of phone would I need to get here in the US to bring to CR?

GSM technology?
Unlocked?
Any kind of chip or without a chip?

Thanks for the help, I know very little about this stuff.

ICE will not activate any phone that has not been purchased in Costa Rica. You must present a receipt showing it was purchased here. If you can somehow get around that you should bring a phone to replace the one she has. If her number starts with a 3 the phone is a TDMA. If the number starts with an 8 it is a GSM line.

You can have GSM service by Cingular. You first must enable International Call ability on your phone by contacting your provider. Around 3 to 5 bucks a month for this. Can't remember exactly what the calls were a minute out of CR. I have Alltel and it is CDMA and will not work in Costa Rica at all, although I have enabled International calling on it and I can call CR. My Alltel will work out of Mexico.

Orange this has been some months ago but I ‘surprised’ my grrl with a new cell phone. I gave her a hundred bucks and told her get hooked in. Later that day she came back with a good phone charged and activated, with change from my cien. Might not buy a ‘razor’ but you get my drift.

Something to think about - maybe she as Tica or Latina can get phoned up easier than you can help with it. The surprise is just as good in my experience. I have bought a couple cell phones in CR and damned if I have one for myself :)

To further clarify I didn’t bring anything other than the hundred bucks. She bought the phone in CR and handled everything else. I will admit to spending more in the past but I didn’t see any difference myself as far as service. I don’t profess to know about ‘designer phones’.

Thanks for the help fellas.

DZ, I did a few searches, read about 8 threads, including that one, but I still wasn't sure if a US-bought phone would work in CR. I can get a new Razor V3 here for $110-120. It's an unlocked GSM quad band phone.

Will it work in CR if she uses her current sim? Anybody have a concrete idea what that phone would cost in SJ? If the difference is minimal, I'll get it in CR just be sure. Can you buy a phone in CR without signing up for new service? She already has service, but her phone is old and it sucks.

My razor cell phone cost 230$ here in CR.

I put in my friends sim chip and the phone would not work.

Had to go to ICE with the receipt and original packaging.

No more gsm lines for at least 2-3 months, probably 6-8 months.

My gsm phone number starts with 344 , the gsm phones numbers used to start with 8 but not any more.
