Hi all. Thanks for all the valuable information on this site. I've been reading and reading for two weeks now. I promise I did a search for the following answers, but could not find what I was looking for.

First: How hard is it to change my Username?

Second: I would like to make the trip to Costa Rica as invisibly as possible. What is the best way to go about this? I have no intention of doing anything illegal, I just don't want it known I ever visited. Should I bring just Traveler's Checks? Some say this is an easy exchange, others argue it is not. Can I get a security deposit box at one of the banks in San Jose and keep my money, traveler's checks and other important information in there without worry? Is going to the bank an invitation to thieves? If I pay cash for an airline ticket, can the ticket still be traced back to me? I realize I can't travel under an assumed name, but any help would be appreciated.

Third: Is there a way to sign up as a VIP member without using a credit card?

Sorry, I know that's a lot of questions. I'm sure I could answer #s 1 & 3 by contacting Admin, but I thought the answers might be useful to other newbies as well.

#1. The only way to change your username is to send a PM to Admin 1 and he'll do it.

#2. Use cash. Traveler's checks can be cashed, but not everywhere. Not as liquid as the greenbacks. Most hotels have safes, so bring $1,000 or whatever amount you think you will need without having to get money out of an ATM, stick it in the safe, and only carry on your person what you'll need for that day/night/session. You can bring $25,000 if you think you'll need it and put it away in the safe, it'll be there when you need it, forgot paying extra for some safety deposit box.

Yes, you can buy an airline ticket with cash but you'll have to go to one of their ticket offices or your local airport to do it. Don't be surprised if you're flagged for extra security.

You're probably going to need a credit card to reserve a room but you can always pay in cash. Some might allow PayPal but you'll still most likely have to use a credit card with them.

In 11 trips to Costa Rica I've never even been in a bank. I take a few hundred in cash and use my ATM card for anything else I need.

Your passport will be stamped with a Costa Rica entry and date so if you're hiding this trip from someone never let them see your passport.

As far as becoming a VIP member, they will accept a check or money order and the name on the card will be your CRT Username. Now I know!

Thanks for the replys so far. The passport stamp shouldn't be a problem, but the credit card for the hotel may be. Now that I think about it, I'm wondering if traveler's checks can be traced. Probably. Don't relish the thought of carrying $5,000 cash with me, even if it's only from the airport to a hotel.

Banks normally will only rent safe deposit boxes to account holders. Many Costa Rica banks will not open an account for someone if they are not a resident.

What are you worrying about hiding? There is a lot to do in CR besides mongering. White water rafting, fishing, canopy tours and more. There is also museums and more in SJ. There are plenty of ways to cover your tracks with some well placed photos. Thousands of tourists come to CR yearly and never venture into the gulch.

Don't you want someone to know where you will be in CR in case something happens to you or something happens back home?

So, Kenneth Green is my mongering name and the FREE part is that I'm free from my job of 12 years... not free from the wife.

I've set myself up to go on a "backpacking" trip in Canada and plan on taking a week from this trip to hop down to Costa Rica. Going to CR to see the sights, without taking the wife, would not work. I'm just trying to cover everything I can. The money can easily be accredited to the backpacking trip. As well as the fact that I can't be contacted. Surely others have had to cover their behinds besides me. Right?
