The unit of currency is the colón (CRC), which trades around 515 to the U.S. dollar; currently about 700 to the euro. For 2007 a new currency exchange system will allow the value of the CRC colón to float between two bands as done previously by Chile. The idea is that by doing so the Central Bank will be able to better tackle inflation and discourage the use of US dollars.

Anyone know how this will effect the exchange rate or anything else monetary?

Where'd you get this info,, the new system went into effect back in October and was discussed quite a bit here at that time. Nothing major or bad happened, the colon actually strengthened a little.

From what I have read the only change that is going to happen in 2007 is that the buy & sell floor and ceiling will be allowed to move further apart.

The Central Bank started with a differential (band) of approximately 15 colones. As they gain more experience with the effects of this policy the plan is slowly widen the band.

Where's the best place for me to change U$D into Colones? Is it best to do it in the airport, or wait 'till I'm at SL & bide my time? Thanks.

True but there is a bank in the airport, do NOT change any $ at the change booth when exiting but once you exit the terminal, go back upstairs to departures there is a BAC bank to the right.

It is better to wait until you get downtown and checked into your hotel. The airport taxi (has a window as you leave the customs hall) takes USD's.

As previously posted any of the casino's exchange at a good rate, there are numerous banks in the gulch that will exchange your dollars at the official rate and you can get colones with your US bank ATM card.

ATM give you an excellent rate for those that are not afraid of leaving a trial. I used the ATM once on an unplanned trip and it showed up on my bankstatement that month so I had some explaining to do.

Is it easier to pay in dollars or colones at the MP's? Is there a set price for both or do they try to screw you on the exchange? I've looked for info on this but haven't really found the answers to these questions.
