A nice historic touch would be the Grand Hotel Costa Rica. It is no longer chica friendly and you'll get the local ambiance without outrageous price.

sorry to differ but it has all the costa rica feel of a rundown dump in the US. It's loud like most downtown SJ hotels. Not worth it.

Not disagreeing with you just asking a question. When did you last stay at the hotel? Do not know about the rooms, since never stayed there, but do know they have greatly upgraded the public areas recently.

I quit staying there after seein what was available elsewhere. I met a client there in FEb 06--rehabbed rooms? OK, rehabbed like a HoJo along the interstate. The place is what it is--an old hotel in SJ that manages to get $60-70 out of gringos I guess because it is the Gran Hotel de CR and it's downtown. I will say this--the restaraunt is a great place to have coffee or a drink later--u will see alot just sittin there.
