Has anyone ever stayed at this hotel, if so please let me know how it is, are they chica friendly??

Unless you don't have a pot to piss in.... this is not a hotel you would want to stay in. I'm sure RBC100 will chime in as he has stayed there before. Their website says it's still 10 bucks a night.

It is maybe the best $10 hotel in San Jose and yes it is chica freindly. You may need to drop the night clerk a 2000 col. note to avoid a fee for the girl. It is however quite basic but has hot water rooms are cleaned daily and staff is freindly. I would stay again if on a tight budget but prefer Vista Linda Apartments which at $20 per night is cheap enough and a nice place.rbc100

I have stayed there a few times and love it. It's NOT a place you will be happy to bring chicas to although the chicas do not really care. When you talk one down to $50 and take them to the NJ they certainly believe you do not have the money to pay more.

It is right in the heart of the central market area. I have gotten chicas to their cabs at night and it felt safe enough to be outside just for that. I felt very comfortable there, especially by day. It's a great way to get the feel for being in SJO(which might not be your cup of tea). I usually only stay there to start a trip if the hotel I want is not available when I arrive. Still, if I were going to SJO on a budget for a few days and would do mostly MPs by day and occasional HDR girl by night, I would not have a problem at the NJ although if I did a high profile chica it would probably get around.

Remember, it's not a nice hotel but it's interesting and it works. You hand the guy a $10 spot and you're set for a day. It's really not that far a walk to the HDR and when you walk out the door of NJ you're on Central Avenue.

RBC, would be interested in a link to Vista Land Apts if there is one.

and it is right next to the Market where you can stroll about in the daytime and enjoy the sights.

I especially like strolling about the Market area in the morning hours and on up to the Calle 6 Avenida 5 block to have an inexpensive breakfast near the Tico massage parlors.

sometimes you bump into some of the little darlings eating their breakfast before going to work (8:00 -8:30am)

the rooms are indeed cleaned daily, tip the cleaning ladies 1000 colones a day for all the extra towels you want.

The front desk asks for 1000-2000 colones for extra for visitors.

for $10, you can't beat it.

At night, take a taxi to the hotel (about 1000 colones with generous tip from the gulch). It is located one block past the end of the pedestrian walkway. Safe to walk about in the daytime.


I like the rooms facing the street in front of the hotel. Yes, it can be loud sometimes, but I like the hustle and bustle.

Never had any little darling complain about the place.

If you want the true Tico experience, this place is a good example.

And, it is safe, the hotel does not put up with people bothering their guests.

I like the neighborhood myself and it is very centrally located. Staying there you are in the real San Jose well removed form the gringo areas. I feel safe enough walking out of the nieghborhood up til abour 8 PM. rbc100

I stayed there over the Labor Day weekend and had no problems. This place can definitely be an experience. It was fun running into Californicationdude in the lobbty chatting up the Tico at the front desk. Aways had goodies with him to share with me, great midnight snacks.

For $10 bucks cash you can't beat it. A 2oooC tip to the front desk guy whenever you bring up a chica. And none of the sweet chicas I brought back to my room ever mentioned and or made me feel like there were not happy with my choice of hotel.

Maybe I am reading this wrong but I just searched and found a Vista Linda Apartments in Costa Rica and it isn't $20 a night. It is at best $300 a week which is $43 a night. Did I miss something?

Just tried the link http://vistalinda.webcindario.com/ and now I am a little confused. Maybe there are 2 hotels with this name.

I like the apartments but they seem a loooong way out of town. RBC100 how do you get around? Are the taxis readily available and cheap to get to the Del Rey for example?

The web link listed above for Vista Linda is the correct one. Carlos has a one week minimum though I often rent for shorter time as I have stayed there a long time and as of last Labor Day rates were $140 per week. It is about 15 minutes from town and bus stops in front every 5 to 10 minutes from like 6AM to 11PM for about 100col. to town. Only time I use a taxi is comming back late at night so helpful to have a business card for taxis. Taxi fare is likely about 1300 col now. One of the pluses of staying at Vista Linda is I have made numerous friends and met some very interesting people there as it caters to mostly retired mongers and frequent visitors.rbc100

I've stayed at the Vista Linda and would give it my seal of approval. I wasn't overly impressed with the quality of the rooms, but for the price who can really complain? I've had to take cabs there more often than RBC, since I'm usually out past 11PM. Back then the cab fares ran under 600c so I find it hard to believe they could have doubled. Buses to/from town were frequent until 11 at night and even at double the 95c rate would be a bargain. One could also walk from there to the Gulch during the day if one were feeling industrious. There has been some talk about the security in the area but the apartment grounds themselves are very safe and the neighborhood is no worse than most areas in SJ. If you want someplace quiet a little more removed from the Gulch then that might be the place.

Last time in while I was in SJ, I stayed at the Hotel Doral for a couple of nights, which is just around the corner from the Nuevo Johnson. I was leary of taking a chance on a $10 hotel room that I could not see first. But I did stop in the NJ on my way to Mercado for desayuno (and that you can still get for under 1000c). IMHO, the rooms look fairly nice, nearly as nice in fact as the rooms at the Doral and maybe better than the ones at the Vista Linda (though they didn't have any kitchen). Personally, I wouldn't have any problem staying there. My only remaining reservation would be the noise factor which I've seen reported elsewhere. The Vista Linda was very quiet. The Doral being in the city had its share of street noise. Someone said the NJ had thin walls and that noise from other rooms compounded noise coming from the street. BTW, that same person described it as a place you'd be ashamed to bring chicas back to. Come on now, has he seen where some of these girls live? If his chicas are that stuck-up he's probably choosing the wrong chicas. More likely he's projecting his own insecurities about the quality of the room on them. Anyway, now I read that Cali actually prefers the extra noise coming from the street. This noise issue may just be a case of YMMV as some guys are just extremely sensitive to it. But then I've also seen post where guys complain about the noise at places like the Prez and the SL.

That could be the place for me. I don't mind taxis and busses. It is all part of the adventure. Same thing for me in Thailand and Ukraine.
It certainly is a bargain price, I like the privacy too and the kitchen. How do the rooms rate? I ask because there is always a big difference between what is posted on the web and reality. Got a shock with a couple of places in London like that.
Regarding noise - I don't go anywhere without several sets of wax earplugs. They work like a charm. I need quiet to sleep and they have saved my ass on more than one occasion.
One of them was a very long occasion - it was called my marriage.
