Is is possible to bring a cell phone from the US and have it programed to function in CR on the ICE system? Or is it better just to buy one in country?

ICE will not program any phone not purchased in Costa Rica. If you are bringing a GSM phone there are no lines currently available even if they would program it. They also will not give you a phone line unless you are a legal resident or have a Costa Rican corporation.

Let's clarify this then please, Is it correct that there is no way to purchase a cell phone in CR that will call back to the US for the average gringo tourist?

Also, is there any method to call back to the US on a land line and not have the caller ID identify where the call is originating from? Does anyone know what caller ID sez when calling from CR back to the States?

There is no way for the "average gringo tourist" to LEGALLY purchase a cell phone in Costa Rica.

That being said it should also be noted that almost every chica in the BM has a cell phone. Are they all legal residents of Costa Rica kind of doubt it

If you talk to a buddy who has a cell phone and use it make sure that his number is auto blocked. the person who you would be calling just sees "private number" PM me for more info

you can get a costa rica cell phone and chip if you just have it put in the name of someone who already has a phone in costa rica

It´s not really a big deal for that person ..as you pay monthly and if you don´t they simply shut off the line until you do,

also, as of 3 o´clock today there were lines available

Where did you get that information? The newspapers reported last week that only TDMA lines were available as ICE had sold out all their GSM lines and would only be releasing lines as they shut people off for non payment in the coming months.

Some US cell phones will work in Costa Rica. A buddy of mine uses his there without any problem. In fact, I have used his phone to call home. I think he has T-Mobile, but I'll check. It's pricey, I think it was $2.25 a minute. The best bet is a calling card. The Presidente sells them at the front desk.

My US phones have never worked, in CR. Despite what carriers tell you.
Isn't it possible to rent phones, in SJO?
All the calls I receive, be they from a buddy's cell or hotel land line, ring up Out of Area. Of course, don't bet the farm or a marriage on this, as different areas of the US have different systems.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe if you use a calling card where you call an access number prior to calling your destination number the access number shows up. And actually that's not a bad way to go. I have used noblecom.com for calling to CR and Colombia though never the reverse. I know service from CR to US is available for somewhere around .40 per minute. You might want to verify for certain what number shows up on the ID though.

I struggled with getting a cell phone in CR for quite a while. I have a CR corporation and a personeria, but since my condo rent also includes utilities, I did not have a untility bill in my corporation's name so I was initially denied. A friend of my Novia offered to set it up in her name so I bought a TDMA phone (ICE ssaid the had no more GSM lines) and sent Novia and friend to get it set up. She called and said they now had more GSM lines and I was able to go back to where I purchased the phone and exchange it for a GSM unit. The girls got it set up at ICE within 20 minutes for a total price of 12,500 colones.

Setting up voice mail was a different story. However Percival at Cel-Tec in Rohomoser set it up for me. Percival speaks perfect English and understands the ICE system very well. You can reach him at 506-296-1886 or on his USA line at 954-237-6550.

Gringostarr: You are correct. My cingular cell works fine but I had to call them prior to my first trip to be authorized for international use. Think it is $1.99/minute. The display changes to ICE while in country. While this topic has been discussed numerous times in the past, I agree an ICE calling card is the way to go most times. Wile Coyote

I actually was asking about the phone only. I have a chica friend who needs a new phone. I told her I didn;t think the US Phones worked in CR. I'm not sure of the cost or quality of phones....so I wasn't sure if it was even worth thinking of bring one from the States.....
