from La Nacion:

75,000 visitors less
The number of tourists visiting Costa Rica decreased by 75,000 October 2005-September 2006, as compared to the number of visitors in the preceding 12-month period, when records show a historical peak of 1,569,400 tourists. According to the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR in Spanish), this means a drop of $100 million in income from tourism, since each visitor spends an average $1,300 during his stay in Costa Rica. CANATUR Alberto Lopez said that this had been expected, but that the whole tourist sector is moving to counter the effect. The Minister of Tourism, Carlos Benavides, asserted that his Ministry is working to recover the lost ground and that 2007 will be a good year for tourism in Costa Rica.

Ah, so the chicas are right! I suspect increased airfares are at least partly to blame.

They can blame it on American Airlines first and foremost, but us Cheap Charlies are gonna have serious rolls of cabbage when we return. Kinda like the no cien thing, it looks so good but I just won't pay seis cien y mas desde Detroit. And I am not alone.

YO Fellows:

I feel your pain. AA has really gotten out of hand. Use to be a lot cheaper to fly out of Orlando than the Pits of Jax but now the fare is closer to even. Martinair has even raised fares and they seem to be sold out unless one reserves a flight two or three weeks in advance. I'm a last moment traveler so it's difficult to get a flight. I sure miss the days when CR was not so popular.......except for me.

Scubabum......are you going to be in SJ for turkey time?

As an experienced English Monger having mongered in all the finest mongering destinations in the world. (Thailand, Phillipines, Eastern Europe and Brazil) I must be honest and say that I am fairly dissapointed with my mongering in CR this week which is my first time in CR. I found everything very expensive and the service average at best, as compared to the above places. Maybe I just got unlucky.

One think I did certainly enjoy though was chatting with the US Mongers
I found you all amusing, great company, full of useful advive and willing to help in any way.

Special mention to one that we met, a very experienced monger with decades of debauchery under his belt is "Tom" (Tdog123). He was a pure gent. He went out of his way to tell us all the tips and tricks about the Latinas and even dragged himself out of bed at an early hour having been shagging all night to give us a whistle stop tout of all his favorite haunts. (ZB, NF, SL etc, etc). He has been the highlight of our trip.

J Time,

Don't cancel your trip based on my single post.

However I am generally a lurker on these web sites and rarely if ever post. This time I really felt I had a need to post (see post re. ZB - this was without a doubt my worst mongering experience for many a year - the only thing postive I would say would be that the actual "massage" was really good but of course who givers a s*** about that).

The CRT webiste is brilliant and I did plenty of research re. what to expect before coming to CR. (Incidently you would be hard pressed to find a BBJ in Thailand and especially so a BBBJCIM)
I knew what to expect. BBJ vs CBJ, CIM vs "hurry the F*** up" etc. I think after 20 + years of being divorced and hard core mongering I know what I am doing

I have been to Tailand recently and SOI 8 Lolitas BBJ CIM etc....30 bucks every day....several other places....check out Bankok2night web site. Eden club, all that stuff. My first time In CR is coming up and I hope to publish a comparison study upon my return. The prices in Bangkok are very cheap in comparison with most major cities but if you go North to Chang Mai............really cheap your talking less than 20 bucks for most services....all nighters 18-25 dollars, quickie 10-15....after acclimating to the system you find yourself arguing over .50 cents....lol...very strange.

the fares I see now make me glad I purchased my ticket for my Thanksgiving trip in February. the fares have gone up a bunch since then. Probably enough that I would think twice about paying that much for a short trip.

Tourism down ?

I'll throw in my 2 selfish colon  ...........Great, demand drives up prices, I hope it drops even lower so we CRT's can reap the benefit of even better pricing .

Don't hold your breath, you will turn blue. :P

BTW, does anybody know why Taca prices a few months out are very high? They come down as seats remain empty closer to travel date. Most airlines are cheaper if you buy 4-6 months out.
