They are just doing their job and they get bored sometimes like everyone and they change it up on you, especially if you act suspicious.
Everything they are trained on is to detect odd suspicious behavior...thats all, they are after the mohammed attas of the world and anybody with a Saudi, Iran or middleeastern passport, NOT 60 year olds coming back from CR.... if they bother you its because they are bored or you are acting overly suspicious.
