Yes, forget putting anything questionable in the carry-on. Not only will you pass through security in CR but also in Atlanta or Miami. Go to the local store and buy your coffee and pack it in your checked luggage.

New Security Measures
In order to address the higher risk, the Department of Homeland Security has implemented the following new security measures until further notice.

No liquids, gels, or aerosols of any size are permitted to enter the sterile area through the screening checkpoint or be in accessible property or on one’s person except:

Baby formula, breast milk, or baby food in small containers if a baby or small Ch*ld is traveling
Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger’s ticket
Up to 4 oz. of non-prescription medicines, including saline solution and other eye-care products
Up to 5 oz. per container of necessary liquids or gels (including insulin and juice) for diabetic passengers
Solid cosmetics and personal hygiene items such as lipstick in a tube, solid deodorant, lip balm, and similar solids
Examples of liquids, gels, and aerosols included in these security measures:

Beverages
Shampoo
Suntan lotion
Creams
Toothpaste
Hair gel
Hairspray
Liquid cosmetics
Other items of similar consistency
Also, you will not be allowed to bring any prohibited liquids, gels, or aerosols purchased after passing through the security checkpoint onboard the aircraft. Any beverages or other liquids, gels, or aerosols you purchase in the airport will have to be consumed or discarded before you board.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other Travel Tips
Here are some more suggestions to help minimize your inconvenience:

Travel light—minimal clutter will expedite the screening process.
Check all of your bags.
See Check-in Requirements for info about when to arrive at the airport.
Store any prohibited duty-free items you have purchased onboard or in the airport in your checked bags before you recheck them following your customs clearance at your gateway city. (Unfortunately, we cannot assume any liability for damage to your duty-free items or other items damaged as a result of breakage or leakage of prohibited duty-free items.)
We'll do everything we can to give you the information you'll need during this heightened-security period. Check back here for updates.

They do have a little Cafe Britt section in the Mas X Menos on Avenida Central, always seems to be a Cafe Brit representative chica there to help too. :) Cheaper than the airport prices I believe.

You cannot bring "liquids" from outside the airport into the sterile area. i.e checkpoint.

Once you have cleared security in SJO you can buy as much as you want and have it delivered to you on the plane.

You clear customs in the US as usual.

Customs is inside the "sterile" area and connections to your home airport should be inside the "sterile" area.

You will have a problem if:

You exit the airport to go outside and smoke, you have left the "sterile" area and will need to be re-screened at the checkpoint and the "no liquids ban" applies and TSA will take your booze.

You will also have a problem if you are connecting to an airline that is not in the terminal you arrive in and you have to exit the "sterile" area and change terminals to catch your flight.

If you are flying Delta through Atlanta then you will not have any problems, All concourses are inside the sterile area.

Call you airline if you have any doubts.

I would not put booze in check-in luggage. Since the liquids ban there are 30 - 40 % more checked bags and the claims for damage and lost luggage has risen as well.

Have you ever seen a ramp worker toss bags around?

Purchase in the city, then stash it in your check-in luggage. Pray your bottles don't break!! I found coffee beans way cheaper in the city. My driver from the SL brought me to a place in the city bagging and vacume sealing, primo beans for $4-$5 a pound. I tried it, taste so good I kept most of it for myself. Will load up on beans in Dec.
