4-5 days a week I walk by the Presidente. I have recently noticed a drastic difference in who is sitting "at the rail". I used to stop almost every day to chat with some friends who were having a late breakfast after a night of debauchery. In the last few months,I haven't recognized anyone. The Ecos and Gringas have taken over, my friends. Management has accomplshed what they set out to do with their dress code changes.

Don't worry Bob, Latinoheat and I will be down to "take back the rail" in a few weeks. And Circus has advised us to bring our own napkins. :)

Damn VB....you over-sexed hombre:

You never once, that I knew, came by during the CRT weekend like you normally do. Probably because old Circus was there.....and hell, I would even serve you breakfast as usual....with three napkins.

Probably a bye week you are witnessing without many CRT fellows. I did notice an unusual absense of felow friends last trip hogging the rail. Not to mention some unsavory gringos that were present and I did not care to have conversation with. Still the best place to gaze upon the pedestrian parade.

We might be new, but our goal is the same. Finding pleasure with the Beautiful Ladies of Costa Rica. I just returned from a 5-day visit and met more non CRT members than anything while sitting at "The Rail".

The rail is by far the best place in SJO to hangout. I never felt like I had to drink-up and leave. They treated me like family!

The management has accomplished what they tried to do. Get rid of the mongers. My little tica GF had words with the manager and told her to take her black list and shove it up her "fundo". We checked out and rented a condo. Was paying the presidente 2500 a month for my room. Now I rent a 1600 sq ft condo in downtown san jose for 600.

You can now get a room there mostly anytime. Im sure when the new place opens across the street the rail will die.

Exactly what is that they have accomplished? Are fewer guys staying there because of their new dress code? Probably. Have ecos and gringas taken their place? Possibly.

But maybe there seem to be more ecos and tourists at that rail these days because they can now finally get a seat. There are 2 sides to the question above. We already have a pretty good idea of why the mongers are less prevalent but the 2nd part of the question is whether this has really paid off for the Prez the way they thought it would. And on that I'm not so sure. Ladiesloveme raises a good question. What sort of vacancy rate are they experiencing now?

In the era before the dress code you could practically never get a room without a lengthy advance reservation. Nowadays I'm willing to bet many more rooms go unsold. I'll grant that these new guests are probably paying closer to full rate so it might still net out to the Prez's advantage, but again I'm not so sure. How many of us would stay at the Prez if not for the discount? I suppose the only way we'll really know the answer to these questions is if either the Prez reverses some of the policy decisions they've recently made or they're forced to extend the CRT discount to regular guests in an effort to fill rooms.

The next follow-up question is how many of these ecotourist types discover the Gulch not to their liking even if the Prez tries to shield them from it in their lobby. For that matter how many of us would stay there if it weren't for the presence of the puta bars and casinos? Sure the Prez is close by to several downtown attractions such as the Teatro Nacional, Museo D'Oro, Muse Jade and muse Nacional, the spectacle of the promenade and the leafy tranquility of some city parks but how many tourists really come to CR for the sights of SJ? If they use SJ as a base for visiting other parts of the central valley by day in order to be close to restaurants and nightlife, aren't there better safer areas for that? So even if they somehow manage to fill some of the rooms vacated by mongers with ecos and gringas, how many of those guests will want to return or even worse recommend it to others?

Here is a recent post I copied from Trip Advisor:
"I do not know. This is my first time back in SJ. I was there in 1976. You could walk the street at 2AM in the morning without any problems back then. But it has completely change since then.I did not know it was like this. I went there with my 12 year old daughter. We stayed at the President hotel.I mean with a name like President; I thought this was a respectable hotel. I thought wrong. I got the hell out of the hotel and city the next day. I am lucky I did not go to jail or prison. My daughter was with me at all times. My daughter always wears nice respectable responsible attire.Every ********* male gave my daughter the "eyeball". I had to follow her to the public restroom the whole day we were there;Because when we first got there, I let her go to the restroom by herself. Three different guys(35+years old) tried to start a conversation with her to and from the public restroom.
I feel really terrible about the whole thing as a father. I should of did allot more research about the city and what was going on.So I not really blaming the city or the "Guys" I should of done my homework. We had a wonderful vacation other than the day lost a SJ."

Now when I first read this, I misread and just figured it was a 21 year old daughter that was being accosted, which would be bad enough, but a TWELVE year old? That is really sick and shocking that not 1 but 3 guys hit on her. I can only hope it was not any CRT'er. But with stuff like that going on I'm not surprised the Prez feels they need to do something about it. Unfortunately, what they really need to do apparently they're not doing, namely kicking out perverts like that as soon as it is seen or reported. Also, if there is any anger to be felt, IMHO it should be directed at guys like that who make the Prez feel like they have to do something no matter how misdirected we think the Prez action might be.

Here's another interesting post from TA:
"We walked back south to the Aveneda Central and after consulting the LP guide, we went to the News Café which is located on the ground floor of the Hotel Presidente. It seemed to be a popular place with Americans and Tico business people. The food was very good and surprisingly reasonably priced. We did see one American “knucklehead” type to had (sic) a scantly clad women with him and his buddy. Someone from the restaurant brought her a coat so she could cover up. I’m assuming she was a prostitute."

Or how about this typical post from a native tico that helps set SJ's reputation among would-be Prez guests:
"San Jose is turning into a dangerous town at night , even the drug dealers are getting robbed , and some shot ¡ I would recommend spending the time in the countryside , unless you like to live on the edge ¡"

The other thing is that even if the Prez manages to clean up the scene in their lobby, they have a steep hill to climb outside their doors. It has also been widely reported and discussed on these regular tourist forums just how bad the Gulch and SJ in general has become for crime and many prospective tourist have become afraid to even step foot in the city but particularly the Gulch. Heck we've discussed this issue heavily here as well. The only difference is that it is far easier for regular tourists to pick other places to stay, while if we want to visit places like the BM, KL, NYB etc. it becomes much more practical for us to bite the bullet (hopefully not literally) and continue to stay in the Gulch.

No empty rooms at the Prez. I tried to book a room at the Prez from Nov. 18 thru Nov. 26 in the spa room or grand spa suite. They did not have those rooms available, and no rooms avail on Nov 18, 19, 24, or 25. I am on the waiting list at the Prez and SL. I will probably end up at the Holiday Inn. I will have to play blackjack for a few days to pay the $25 chica fee at the Holiday Inn. lol
Hey VB is the Horseshoe open for business. Enjoyed eating ribs last year, and playing cards a little bit.

Chiro I hear the Holiday Inn waives the tica fee for VIP's Check with Adm 1.

I heard the Pres has rooms but are advising mongers no vacancy to hold them open for non mongering tourists. Will rent them 2 days before the date. This came second handed so I had my Tica GF call and check

Yes rooms available on your dates and the rate is $51 for a Tico

I was told no rooms as well and I did not advise them I was a CRT VIP. How do they know I am not just there as a tourist?

The 25.00 chica fee stays intact, or it's only 10.00 more for a registered guest.

Interesting possibility-this was mentioned in another thread.

I'm asking because on one of my previous trips several CRT members were told Presidente was booked but I walked in one day and got a room with no problem. NO advanced reserverations and had no problem.
Just wondering if they are trying to weed out a particular type of guest.

I did not mention it in my inquiry as I had wondered about the same. But figured I would provide it after they returned a favorable response on availability. I like the spa rooms, but the only availability was for 2 of my 4 nights.

So is the Pres. really pulling this and just using us as backup guests to fill rooms at the last minute? Maybe, it would certainly make good business sense to hold out and get 70.00 for a standard room from an eco-tourist instead of only 51.00 from a late night drunken, noisy, gringo-monger parading young women through the hotel. But as LTS just said he never mentioned CRT, unless they are just profiling single male travelers. Another discrepancy I see is that Chiro's post is confusing -he says no rooms available then states he wanted a Spa suite or Grand Spa suite. LLM's Tica called and they have standard rooms available those dates for 51.00, did she inquire about the spa suites, or did Chiro inquire about the standards? And if the hotel is doing it why would they offer a potential 70.00 room to her at the Tico price of 51.00 if they were trying to hang on to get the full price with the tourist season rapidly approaching?
Not trying to split hairs but just point out the details of this speculation, it wouldn't be surprising if they were doing it and who could blame them but on the other hand at this point it appears there's not enough clear evidence to substantiate it.
I do believe long term guests of the hotel do get priority over new ones, whether us long term regulars are mongers or not. And we should get priority, as Prolijo pointed out how many of those eco-tourists will ever return to stay in the shit-hole we lovingly refer to as the gulch?

I agree with PL. Further supported by the fact that The Prez did offer me a standard room for 2 of my 4 nights and I could be waitlisted for the other two. I just prefer to stay in the same place and not have to move, so I declined.

Another choice for those newbees is the Dunn Inn. (Many ole timers will remember the girl shows there) Its two blocks walk north of the Holiday Inn and only one block from the ZB . ( Ave 11, Calle 5)

They advertise 37. a night I never stayed there but hear its nicer than the DR or Morizan. Phone is 506 222 3232 and web site is "dunninn@racsa.co.cr"

Check out their add in Tico Times

The Prez told me they had no room available on Nov 18, 19, 24, and 25th. They did have stardard rooms for me on all other days from the Nov 18 thru Nov 26. They had no Spa rooms, or grand spa suites on any day. The Sportmans has a standard room and standard deluxe, but would have to move rooms 2 - 3 times. The SL had no upper ended rooms avail, but put me on the waiting list. I booked at SL, and will wait to see if they get cancellations.
I never told the Prez that I was CRT. Costa Rica is becoming to popular. Please tell all your friends how bad it is down there. lol

Hope to be able to eat some turkey with fellow CRT'ers. I will be staying at some hotel during that time.
