Not to steal thunder from my good friend PIDD's post but this episode with the napkins at the Pres placed me in a role I'm only familiar with when observing "ugly americanos".....never did I think that perhaps I would assume that role.

Yea, old Circus has about run the gamut when it comes to crazy episodes in floreign lands....especially in CR. All in all it has been great fun and never intentionally wishing harm or disrespect to anyone except for myself.

It was Saturday around 1pm when my dear friend Don Papi and I met for lunch at the News Cafe. As we sat waiting for service I got up and retrieved six napkins since there were none on the table and returned to my chair. No sooner had I sat down when the cashier "Alejando" rush over reaching between us and snatched four of the napkins somewhat rudely. Papi and me were astonished and I yelled "What in the hell are you doing?" This is where I lost it. I jumped up and went to his counter and loudly stated "YOU ASSHOLE." Then I turned and went to the bar and got the asst. manager to address the problem...good thing because I was about to become really ugly and deck the SOB.

Before waiting on the asst. manager I again confronted Alejando and pointing my finger at him I yelled "ASSHOLE, DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN !!!" Too mad for espanol... just abrupt english. It was then when I looked around and became aware of the patrons.....mostly ticos and ticas with a flavoring of tourists with startled looks and mouths open. Yep, for the first time in this country that I have admiration for....old Circus became the "Ugly American."

Papi and me quickly exited the cafe and found lunch elsewhere although I had lost my appetite. As I reflect on this episode I feel badly for the other patrons along with employee friends I know at the Pres. On Monday I discussed it with Catherine and Daniel who run the Pres and it was a contest somewhat to see who among us could apoligize the most. They were very understanding and did inform me that a new restaurant manager was in training......which is sorely needed. I have had a very nice relationship with the Presidente for a number of years and this was a small thing yet a dent in my armor exposing a tempermental side that I had thought long vanished with age.

Shit, not only can I not get laid but now I've got to wipe this ugly face with only two napkins.....pitiful is as pitiful dies.

Hard to believe 4 napkins too many became such a problem ? I can honestly say Ticos can be very short sighted ! When I see something like this which I have in CR it leads me to believe this type of person doesn't like Gringos much. YMMV

Circus next time just go to the men's room & get a roll of toilet paper & see what happens !

Its really a shame that most of us need 4 napkins in the land of the small napkin to get the same result we would in a stateside establishment.
I swear that if I ever open a resturant here, I'll go out of my way to call it "The Big Napkin"

The Presidente uses napkins that are found in diners here. They should at least be using a double fold 12in in a hotel. I always use way too many napkins in CR because they are so damn small and thin and actually probably more costly.

but circus has always respected the ticos, and their culture, from what I have seen. Now, when shootin the shit with gringos, that might be a different story, as I have seen one jerk who did'nt think he was right......
