OK FBMs,

My first posting on this board. I have done my homework. I've RTFF. And I've even tried the Search option, but that returns an enormous number of posting to try and read through. So, I'm forced to post a question. If it turns out to be a "dumb ass newbie" question, I apologize in advance. Please laugh along with me.

I've obviously never been to CR - or any other latin american country for that matter. Consequently I'm confused. I get the general drift that a Tica is a woman. And so is a Chica. And so is a Nica! But what the &^%$ is the difference? :?

I'm looking forward to my first visit to CR and don't want to make a horrible mistake and call someone a Tica, when I should have called her a Nica, or Fica, or Lica for that matter!! :shock:

I appreciate your help,
CM

CM,
Tica = Costa Rican Woman
Nica = Nicaraguan Woman
Chica = All Latina's In General
Tico = Don't Even Think About It

One small correction :D

All Nicaraguans male or female are referred to as Nica's. Males are not refereed to as Nico's. :shock:

ID,
Thanks for the correction. I was not aware that a male Nicaraguan is referred to as a NICA. :oops:

But, that brings up a question. Why wouldn't they be a NICO, with the "O" designation for masculine versus feminine? Just curious...... :roll:

I have never been able to find anyone who can explain that. I first learned it in a Spanish class here in CR and have had it confirmed by others but no one I have asked can really explain why.

Nica is simply a shortened term for Nicaraguense. Whether the person is male or female, they are still NICAraguense. Costa Ricans usually use their nickname to describe themselves (Ticos/Ticas) in addition to saying they are Costarricense. Each of the other countries in Central America have nicknames as well (Chochos for Nicaraguans, Guanacos for Salvadoreans, etc.) but they don't seem to use them as much as the Ticos.

Sandinista

Appreciate the explanation on the use of Nica for both M & F. You are the first person I have been able to get an answer from that makes sense. Thanks :D

Because it sounds too much like TICO..........

No harm in a little TICO and NICA rivalry humor, and for those of you who don't know TICOS hate them NICAS.

No pun intended........... Hell I don't hate 'em I bang 'em. The chicks that is.

Peace.

Thank you gentlemen for your information. I'm enlightened and can pursue the next step....getting me and my travel partners to settle on a date for our trip. Can't wait!! :lol:

Let me say that I really enjoy this forum and find it very useful, friendly and fortunately, lacking in some of the more irritating aspects of other forums I belong to. Look forward to meeting up with some of you and sharing a drink or two.

Thanks,
CM
