First of all, the Colonial was closed when I went by there around 8-9am one morning. Not sure what the deal is.

I ended up finding my own places that I liked after that.

That Crolitto place, as described, was too far to go. I started walking there and realized it was a long way from the gulch; also apparently not a good area from what it looked like, the direction I was going... To each his own.

I ended up going to this place on Avenida Central, I wish I could remember the name of it, it's on the left as you're walking down the Avenida towards the Mercado Central but only about half that far. Near that store, Ekono with a blue sign and just past that store on the left with a big 3D ocean wave over the entrance. Breakfast Tipico is 1500 colones including coffee and juice and is very good.

Another good place for the same price is right next to the Gran Hotel, in that mall there known as the "Centro Comercial de Pelo" because of all the haircutting places inside it. Anyway, right on the main street there, the street the Gran Hotel is on, just up the stairs is a little restaurant that has very good food, sandwiches and stuff and a good cheap breakfast Tipico.

I think you are referring to Manolo's. Did they have 4 or 5 tables outside the main dining room overlooking Avenida Central?

They have been there forever and is on of the few places open 24 hours a day. Good food, reasonable prices and famous for their churros that a tica sells from a little stand at the entrance to passers bye.

Did not intend to offend; maybe I am wrong about it not being a good area, and maybe I read the map wrong. All I know is I was walking in the direction of the coca-cola from the gulch and I began to realize that and said, "Oh screw it". I also was in a time crunch. No offense meant, I was just reporting how I came to not end up getting there.

Yes, it is Manolo's. Very good. I didn't know they were open 24 hours. I wonder how that area is at 3am??? Good to know it's open early, though...

Beware, right now they have a sign on the front ( a plastic banner) advertising the bar upstairs, with a different name. I wrote it down, but as luck would have it I can't find my notes. Anyway, one could think this was NOT Manolo's, but it is; you can still see the name Manolo's but it's not as noticeable as the banner for the bar with a different name. The main way to find it is by the landmarks of EKONO and the 3D wave store, and yes, it sticks out into the Avenida with some tables surrounded by a fence.

You were going West. Criolitas is North from the gulch. The walk should be fine at breakfast time, though not when it is dark, and is only around 300M from the HDR. Just go North on Calle 9 past the Metal School and hang a left on Ave 7.

So that explains my comments: I was obviously confused as to the Criolitas' whereabouts. I'll have to try it next time!
