I personally thought both concerns were pretty valid.
I always carry my toiletries on carry-on, due to the frequency of misplaced baggage by lovely Delta Airlines, and my contact lens fluids are of HIGH importance due to excessive drying while on the plane on occasion. I'd cringe at having to buy my toiletries every time I land at a new destination... The other alternative is obviously putting them in my checked-in baggage, but then back to lovely Delta Airlines misplacing my baggage about 5-10% of the time I travel...
Duty Free will definitely feel the sting of this, as will us boozers who love the discounted prices and sometimes unique selections only found at certain Duty Free's.
Ultimately though, my security is a bajillion times more important than any two of these almost insignificant factors (when compared to safety), so I say "We gotta do what we gotta do."
Where is Osama these days anyways, are we even hunting for him anymore with any REAL urgency? Seems like I don't even hear his name on the news anymore with any real frequency as I did post-9/11.
There was a GREAT film I rented just on Monday at the video store called "Why We Fight." It's a GREAT film which I recommend to everyone which provides a very interesting perspective on the movitations behind what we do in the Middle East. I know this seems like a tangent comment, but based on the fact that the name "Al Qaeda" is plastered all over the news again, it's a great film for some new insight.
Another tangent (sort of), but for you conspiracy buffs check out this link to a video that will REALLY make you go "hmmm" regarding the 9/11 attacks. It's a little over an hour long, but it's so interesting it will seem like 5 minutes:
