I personally thought both concerns were pretty valid.

I always carry my toiletries on carry-on, due to the frequency of misplaced baggage by lovely Delta Airlines, and my contact lens fluids are of HIGH importance due to excessive drying while on the plane on occasion. I'd cringe at having to buy my toiletries every time I land at a new destination... The other alternative is obviously putting them in my checked-in baggage, but then back to lovely Delta Airlines misplacing my baggage about 5-10% of the time I travel...

Duty Free will definitely feel the sting of this, as will us boozers who love the discounted prices and sometimes unique selections only found at certain Duty Free's.

Ultimately though, my security is a bajillion times more important than any two of these almost insignificant factors (when compared to safety), so I say "We gotta do what we gotta do."

Where is Osama these days anyways, are we even hunting for him anymore with any REAL urgency? Seems like I don't even hear his name on the news anymore with any real frequency as I did post-9/11.

There was a GREAT film I rented just on Monday at the video store called "Why We Fight." It's a GREAT film which I recommend to everyone which provides a very interesting perspective on the movitations behind what we do in the Middle East. I know this seems like a tangent comment, but based on the fact that the name "Al Qaeda" is plastered all over the news again, it's a great film for some new insight.

Another tangent (sort of), but for you conspiracy buffs check out this link to a video that will REALLY make you go "hmmm" regarding the 9/11 attacks. It's a little over an hour long, but it's so interesting it will seem like 5 minutes:

Laterz!

Steve,
That was low.

And it's "WIT", dammit!

As for Duty Free, I think you might be able to buy before you leave the states since it's delivered to the plane. If you buy when you land and you pack it into your checked luggage you should be able to get it home. Just make sure you pack it well.

I brought back 2 bottles of rum in my checked luggage last month. They were .75 liter bottles in their own boxes and I wrapped them in a towel and stuck them in the middle. No problem.

I have had problems previously with gel & shampoo breaking open when in checked baggage...anyone have any tips to avoid this?

Also, for any other Canadians on the board, I just checked & the restrictions apply to flights within Canada, to the UK & to the US, but implied they'd be allowed for other destinations? I would assume though, that if you're connecting in a US city, the restrictions would apply.

Bob,
Put anything that might break into a zip-lock bag. I only carry mini bottles but they have some that are for freezer storage that are twice the size of the sandwich size. That can then be wrapped in a plastic bag from the grocery.

I make sure everything I pack is in plastic bottles but I still put it into a zip-lock just so they don't leak. I learned that the hard way after a small bottle of moutwash leaked in my shaving kit and it was in my carry-on!

I buy the gallon and quart size Ziploc Freezer Bags and put the bottles/tubes into them. The bags are reusable once the consumables are gone, handy for sorting souvenirs, packing single pieces of malodorous laundry (or pleasantly scented laundry, like that pair of used panties you may watn to buy from a chica).

True. But there's a bit of news...next.

American Airlines announced they are cancelling three of sixteen flights to North America, originating in England. The affected cities have not yet been announced.

In order to help its passengers comply with the new carry-on regulations, American is waiving surcharges for bags over its 50 lb. limit.

It is hoped that other carriers will follow suit.

As the plot allegedly revolved around placing explosive devices in contact lens solution, it is IMHO reasonable for the government to prohibit these items. I too will suffer, as I depend upon OTC eyedrops while flying. Also, I use saline nasal spray to compensate for dry cabin air. No mas. :(

I predict that requiring passengers to pack liquids in their checked luggage will necessitate careful and probably more thorough examination of your checked bag. Anything to stay safe, right?

Reading couple of AP articles, an official said that he expects these restrictions to be go away within 72 hours, possibly a bit longer. This was an emergency reaction to the news, it was feared that there may be other participants in the plot that weren't known about. So a few days of hassle right now, then it should get back to normal.

Man I just got back from this garbage. Missed 4 connections because of it to.

So Im at LAX, waiting to fly back to Vancouver. I go up and check my bag in, the girl says "Their was a terrorist attack in London so you cant bring water and liquids ok?", sure I dont have any of that stuff so I walk on.

I get to the security check point, and they go crazy with my bag. They throw out my deoderent, toothpaste, listerine, shampoo, cologne, and basically every other thing besides my clothes.

They seized peoples duty free stuff, saying they couldnt take it on the plane anymore.

It was a mess, all of my flights were AT LEAST 1.5 hours . You werent even allowed to buy pop/water/juice in the terminal stores.

All this could be a plus for airfares. If fear, once again, grips the flying public ticket prices could drop if ridership takes a nose dive.

Looks like the next airport auction is going to be like hitting a walgreens store. The government makes a lot of money off of these items that are confiscated. I hope the government donates the latest batch to the needy. I for one do not oppose any security measures that will make my flight safe. I do hope they will ease up on the duty free purchases.

Fellas: I am soooo ashamed of myself for my post that caused some little shit so much anguish. Especially the part about asking those of you flying to advise how this affects the to and from...Costa Rica. I can't believe that it took me over 400 posts to finally get flamed. Pura Vida

Dear Little SHit,

I don't mean to hijack Uncle WIt's thread here. Transportation is key to our hobby, but rest assured, I won't take much time here.

My question for you, Little Shit:

You've lived in Costa Rica for 12 years? Wow. Presumably, you have much information, many contacts and other help you could be sharing with your CRT brothers. Yet in all this time, and having been a CRT member since Day One, you haven't shared any of the knowledge you've gained in 12 years of living in tiquicia. Why? :?
