Before you get out your flamethrowers, read this entire post, please.

I am a recovering Catholic who hasn't been to Mass in probably three years, if you count the one Christmas Eve Mass I went to a couple years ago.

I am interested in attending church once while in C.R.

Why?

Well, for one thing I've never attended Mass in Spanish. For another, I'm sure that there will be numerous local lovelies who will help me find my way to the communion rail. Finally, I'm praying constantly for a dear friend who is in a coma, for my Dad who at 74 has just had his first three strokes, and for Circus (for obvious reasons).

All kidding aside, can someone fill me in on the most accessible church to the SL? I'm certain no one will be able to give me times for Mass.

Nothing wrong with that......I've thought about it myself. I've been inside the large Catholic Church beside the Central Park and it's beautiful. Lots of beautiful art and sculptures . I wasn't attending a service, but was visiting as a "tourist," as many do. Everyone made me feel welcome . There may be churches closer to the SL, but I'm sure any cabbie will know how to get to this one. It would be a short cab ride from the SL.

El Cig – Iglesia Santa Teresita is just east over on the far side of Hospital Guardia from SL. If you skirt the north side of the hospital on Ave. 9 you bang right into it, across Calle 23. Seems like the bell clangs around ten or eleven in the morning I don’t remember exactly. You should just about be able to hear it from SL.

El C, I think attending a service in CR is a great idea. Ive thought about that myself. My prayers go out to your father and Circus.

If your spanish hasn't improved since last trip here's a little phrase from the priest you'll need to know:

"demuéstreme en la muñeca donde tocarle"

"show me on the doll where to touch you"

I think there is a method to El Ciego's desire to go back to church. I think he plans to hang near the confession booths and time the good looking chicas going in to see how long it takes for her to give her confession.

Was there last Sunday! It is absolutely a beautiful building. Obviously, mass is in Spanish. The place was packed at about 9:30am last Sunday. You will see vendors outside selling their wares, beggars, cops etc.. But, I do recommend going. Any cab driver in the entire country will know how to get there. That won't be a problem.

You can get a cab out to Cartago for 4K colones if you take a taxi from the "taxi collectivo." This is located on the corner before going up the hill to the Del Rey from the Prez. Those guys hanging out near the restaurant are drivers and they are going to Cartago.

Surprised nobody has mentioned it but I believe around Aug. 2nd will be an interesting time to visit Cartago- there will be hundreds of thousands of people making pilgrimage to the church. Paco, never been during that time. The holiday is the Virgin de Los Angeles. People from all over the country walk to Cartago. Yes, you can take the bus for 300 colones. Very efficient bus system. But, from the bus stop you will probably need/want a cab to the church. It is several blocks away. Maybe a 500 colones ride from the bus stop to the church.

For those inclined I would check it out. Very open entry ways. So much so that during mass you can watch the birds flying around inside the building.

On the topic of church I was walking around the area near Nuevo Johnson one trip I stayed there and heard music, singing and celebration nearby and wandered into a church. Definitely wasn't a Catholic church but the people there were very happy and really having a great time I stayed a while and enjoyed the service. We are not talking a little place this was a big church. People were very freindly and a very different kind of church some of them even tried to give up thier seat as I don't think to many gringos wander in off the street. Maybe I looked the part of a lost soul but do have a spirtual side and that was truly a spirtual experience. We may just need to visit that church the the weekend I am in town as I think you would like the place El Ciego.rbc100

Not to minimize your suggestion (it's a good one RBC), but think of the geographical advantages. A little church, a little session on c. 6... Who says religion and whoremongering don't go together?

It is not in a great neighborhood but these were well dressed folks in their Sunday best. I was really suprised to find such a place in that neighborhood. It is in close proximity to Calle 6 by the way and things don't get going good there til after 12 so just enough time for church.rbc100

The Basillica is the oldest in Costa Rica and is quite beautiful.

I visited the Basillica in Cartago last year during Confession. I was amazed to see half a dozen young ladies making their way towards the Confessional on their knees!

I have been to that Basilica . It is a beautiful place. I bought a picture book on the place when I visited . Church there would be a nice experience I am sure.rbc100
