Hello lumber pickers, ivory ticklers and skin pounders,

It seems unlikely that we'll actually have time for a jam over the Labor Day weekend, although I still think it would be fun. I think most of us will have too much on our individual plates to take on the time to rehearse, then do a performance. Not only are we constrained by time, but it will also be very difficult to arrange for instruments and a sound system. I'll jam with anyone, of course...but I know that I personally won't have the time to organize anything for that weekend.

:(

However, if we were to play, the group would need a name. Here are my pitiful suggestions; feel free to add your own to the list:

The Prostitontos

Gringo Bingo

Poopdeck Papi' and the Tuna Trawlers

Gentlemen Among Whores

No Cien Men

C.R. Tease

Okay creative ones, run with it! I intend to bring my wind piano with me, so maybe we can sit in with the too-loud reggae band at the SL? I think they might be able to use the help.

I also have this fantasy of climbing onto the stage at the Key Largo and performing an original tune in Spanish, thus getting a trio of hotties to do me for free, just to hear me cantar en la cama. But I'm pretty delusional anyway!

El Ciego, here are a few suggestions for the name of your band:

The Trouser Trouts

Mouthful of Shag

The Dick Hertz Band

Feeling Mary

The Ballsacks

...and one that will probably get you a free piece of ass:

The Vegas Bobs

Ok, Ok, I've been a working musician since I was 10 , over 50 now.
Played in a lot of rock bands in the younger years. Mostly Blues now. Festivals & outdoor type gigs lately. Even played backup for a short time in a multi-platinum, multi grammy outfit.
Still got my chops up , ready to play anytime.
See everybody labor day.

So...Strat... Are you going to bring an axe with you to Costa Rica? I cut it in any key, mofo! Multi-platinum group...please PM me with details so I can provide the proper worship.

I've played backup/warmup for numerous famous country and blues acts. I'm backing Willie Nelson just before coming to C.R. in August. I've been the only honky in an otherwise all-black R&B band, the only Anglo in a conjunto of Latinos, have appeared on at least three records you've never heard and have produced jingles for national companies including Arby's and Pizza Hut restaurants.

And after all that.... I still suck!

Well El C - since you originally proposed the idea and now appear to be backing out, let's call our would-be band:

"Blind Man's Bluff" :P :D

Just kiddin' my man - certainly can relate as far as the logistical difficulties in trying to put something like this together. I may just haul my acoustic down there anyways in case there's a slow afternoon where someone wants to sit around and jam on Beatles tunes.

Best,
GR

Not really backing out. I initially sought the list of players to test the waters. Frankly, I was really surprised by not only the level of interest but the number of musicians here.

Remember that I will have a full schedule for the party weekend, if everyone who has expressed interest in doing something together shows up. Also, I remember that in C.R., one can have a plan but should be prepared to toss the plan out the window at a moment's notice.

I am bringing the melodica. Only one patch, but it's portable, doesn't need electricity and has 37 keys. Almost 4 octaves of fun. So yeah, bring an acoustic guitar, kazoos, anything portable. Or, we can attack the reggae band and use their gear while they drink tequila and play pool on the table intended for hotel guests.

"Blind Man's Bluff." Now that's funny. Actually, I'm more into "Blind Man's Boff." One needs priorities.

I don't care to try to coordinate any event but I do have some equipment to lend and can play. I live here and don't much care when this thing happens or in what form. About all that's missing is a drum set and I may be able to find one of those too.

I don't see that we have to make any giant production out of this. If there are a few of us going to be here anytime, we can try it, can't we? I'm just not an organizer. I did my stints as bandleader and don't care to deal with anything other than showing up and playing (loading gear if I can't find a roadie).

As I said, I am here all the time, so if two more guys can show up, we can probably do something somehow. I can cover guitar bass or drums, though my drumming is not going to catch Buddy Rich's attention in Hell.

Alright Bilko,

If you've got some gear (and this goes for any C.R. resident reading this), let's find out if Bill Alexander at SL would mind us setting up in his bar or atrium. Then maybe we can put together something casual for Friday night before the party.

Also, any CRT'er who wants to do so could bring any instrument they feel comfortable dragging on an airplane...guitars, harmonicas, kazoos, percussion instruments etc. I'll be leaving the Steinway at home, however.

I do think it would be a fun jam, but I just don't want to infringe on anyone's time. I do think we'll all be fairly busy during the week prior to and including the Anniversary Party.

Sounds like this could still be on...and I would be happy to bring the 88 keyboard which is already in CR. To me, drums are optional...and in some ways better without if someone is just going to "bang" on them. Just some side percussion like the normal musicians use there...conga, etc...would be enough for that room in my opinion.

I think Bills PA system there could be usable for this also. Not sure, but think so.

Ax for being a busy weekend...how many nuts can you bust or hours can you spend in a massage parlor in one day? I cant believe anyone who wants to jam or listen is not going to have a couple hours on the weekend to chill with their jammin brothers of CRT  . Ya gotta come up for air sometime...

Hope we can make this thing happen. I think it would be fun...and if we're good enough, maybe someone will pick us up and send on a mongers music tour to all monger hotspots...like Rio, Colombia, Panama, Dominican, etc  ...

Stratone...you know how I judge rock bands when I first see them?

If they play Fender Strats or Gibson Les Pauls, I figure they'll be pretty
good. Also, it doesn't hurt to have Marshall amps.

Also, it doesn' hurt to have talent, be able to read, look good and arrive at the gig in a vehicle newer than 5 years old...but it rarely happens that any band meets all criteria.

Marshall amps are the most overrated gear in the world IMHO. There are at least six brands which provide more power, reliability, sound cleaner and are more roadworthy...but YMMV. As for rockers playing Gibson, I have always associated Gibson guitars more with jazz. Just a bias, I guess.

Marshalls overrated??? Are you serious? Just curious, how old are you?
Certainly, Fender, Mesa Boogie, et al. make great amps, but if you're playing rock, nothing beats a Marshall :!:

I'm 49 as of the 4th of July last.

Marshall built its largely undeserved reputation in the late 1960's, competing with the then more popular HiWatt. Players like Hendrix used them, endorsed them, abused them...all with great results. I'm not saying that a Marsh stack doesn't rock, but there are better amplifier/speaker combinations out there. I have personally never liked Marshall for anything other than hard rock; they're dirty, have poor S/N ratio and very high distortion, even on the clean channel. They're also in my experience less reliable than other makes. Again, this is a very subjective preference, and I know numerous guitarists who swear by their Marshalls.

The last rig I used for keyboard amplification was a 600 watt/channel Carvin head pushing a pair of custom-built 2 X 10 + 1-15 cabinet using JBL drivers. Clean, clean, clean...and never overheated, even at full stereo output. Apples and oranges, I know. I'm a keyboard player and don't use guitar gear at all.

To me, Marshall, like Fender is part of the rock n' roll mythos. Just as Fender guitars became shitty after CBS bought Fender, then returned to higher quality in the 1980's, Marshall has had its inconsistencies. So maybe I'm basing my "overrated" statement on stacks I heard when the product wasn't as good? :?

Anyway, back to the topic. Any electric guitarist who is going to play in the bar at SL will need little more than a Pignose or Peavy (yuck) Backstage, IMHO. The 1.5 kW Marsh stack would be overkill. :D
