Curious as to if I should bring or buy. One, a DVD player. I wont get the compact travel type as friends have had bad luck with them. They do have small ones at wally world and best buy and such. $35-50. What would I pay in CR for a simple DVD player. I am leaving it for a friend so its a one way item. I only want to bring it due to I am in an apartment for a little over a month. I will get board with CNN.
Dom. Yes, pop the cork I am taking a bottle? Should I try at duty free? SJ stores?( I will never buy a $300 bottle at the marlin again  ) I can get it for like $98 a bottle here. Maybe less if I call my distributor and see, only problem is the club has to order by the case, that leaves 11 bottles we will never use. Whats the price at duty free if any one know? I could bring 3 bottles of moet for that price as I like it better. The chicas just like Dom for some reason (read that as high dollar). Also trying to be careful of the 8 litre rule for bringing it in. I am toting 3 bottles of patron, bottle of Goose, bottle of crown reserve, and 2 bottles of jager. I dont want to push it as I took 11 litres in last time and was sweating. Never checked though there is always a first. Any info is greatly appreciated! I can also post more as I fired AOL!

Let me try to answer.
Electronics are twice the price in CR as in North America in general.

Booze:
I have not seen Dom in the Duty Free store but they have some good French sparklers as I recall.
They have Stoli and Stoli gold at $8 and $10 as I recall, which I think equals Grey Goose.
I do not remember seeing Crown Reserve or Jaggermister and cannot remember about Patron.

A DVD player is one of the things on the list that you are allowed to bring one (1) in duty free for personal use. If the guy at the x-ray screen, if he is even watching, see's electronicos in your suitcase he will refer you for inspection. Once that person realizes it is a DVD player just tell them it's for your house, apartment, or condo. I have done this and had no problem. I did not see where they made any notation of who I was or what I had brought in so I assume you could bring another at a later date. However, in combination with that amount of alcohol I can't say what they would do when they discovered the bottles along with the DVD player.

I have never seen Crown Reserve available duty free anywhere :( .

DVD Regular players are only about $50.00 bucks in CR the cheap ones so is it really worth it to save the 10 bucks..

DOM went up recently DUTY FREE WAS 104.00 UP about 3 weeks ago to $140.00 I can get it in ABC liquors here in NJ for $115.00 including taxes if you want Dom bring it with you.

... 8.00 Red Stoli 1 liter 10.00 gold (Black Label .750) Blue Stoli 100 PROOF .750 Liter 10.00

Crown Royal $14.00 NO RESERVE ANYWHERE IN DUTY FREE

Don Melchor Cabernet Reserve 2002 Vintage States goes 75.00 & Up... was 29.00 in duty free now $35.00 for the wine drinker this is the BOMB...

Johnnie Walker Blue Label 120.00 a bottle

Some good Tequila Values as well, though I gave it up a long time ago Patron is available for $44.00 that the gold label.

I think I spend way to much time in duty free.

All the liquor except the Dom is free. I like stoli (not big on goose or vod for that matter) but goose is free. Thats why it comes with me. If I can get a DVD in then I may just do that as long as it is cool with customs. Carry on or in the suit cast? I am bringing my laptop back pack and could slide it in there? I'll see what happens I guess. Thanks.

I had my notebook in my carry-on and the DVD in my suitcase. The x-ray guy asked if the carry-on had a computer and I said yes. He had the bag gone through beacuse he saw additional elecronicos, you know the fat lady at the tables, and she had no problem bringing in the DVD "por me casa", YMMV. She didn't bother to go through the carry-on.

Just got in promo bottles of moet with an order. Guess thats the bubbly I take! Stoli is just as good a goose. Someone put goose in a rap song and it took off. We only have smirnoff no stoli. :( Corazon is a hell of alot better than patron, as is tezon. I just get patron free. Its a better price in my opinon. Patron platinum is awesome. Just really $$$.
I'll throw the DVD in the suitcase and I take the liquor in my carry on. If they give me sh*t the give me sh*t. Doesn't sound like I'll have a problem though. Maybe giving the DVD player away is a bad idea! She can work for it......

Buy the DVD player and bring it to CR. As mentioned, DVD players ain't cheap in SJO, 50-60 big bucks for a crappy one.

You should be able to get a small size player at Walmart for under 30 USD, I bought one 2 months ago at Walmart, here in Canada for 29 CAD. Works great.

Also, I never had problems bringing electronics into CR , remote controlled toy cars, CD walkman, DVD player home entertainment systems, mini stereo systems.

Keep in mind that if you mix DVD players with DVD discs from different countries, you can run into region code problems. Region codes are something the DVD industry came up with to combat piracy. DVDs sold in North America have a region code of 1 and Latin America uses code 4. Some DVD players and computer drives are preset to play only the local region code. You can usually go into a setup program and change the region code a limited number of times (usually 4 times), and after that the region code is unchangeable.

Of course you can always buy ‘rip’ and ‘copy’ software and create your own DVDs without region codes. These applications run on any PC with a DVD writer. The ‘ripper’ breaks through the copy protection and removes the region codes so the ‘copy’ program can create a new unprotected DVD.

It is illegal to sell a copy program that includes a ripper, but it is legal to sell them separately. It is also perfectly legal to own both software packages and use them together to make personal backups. The DVD industry is in court trying to take the rippers off the market, but for the time being they are plentiful and only cost about $40. I use a ripper called AnyDVD and a copier called DVDClone, which are sold separately -- by the same company. Every now and then I find a new DVD with an encryption code I can’t break through, then a few days later AnyDVD comes out with a free upgrade that breaks it.

Very true & if a guy wants to buy one player that will play most disks without problems buy one made by LG!

True.

But most , should I say, ticos don't play original DVD's on their player. The " copies " that they play, from what I have seen, seemed to be universal-coded, or N. America compatiable the least.

Back to the region code thingy, I have bought original DVD's from a music store at Multi-Plaza, never have any problem with my regular players back home. Many of the imported discs in CR are code ( all region ) .

Try the 30 buck player at Walmart. It plays most DVD disc , in N. America and in CR as well.
