There was a police raid at the Del Rey and Key Largo tonight [Thursday, 6/29]. It involved a large number of officers. Apparently they were checking for immigration violations, for drugs, etc. Apparently it was an attempt to clean up some of the problems in the area......a general sweep. They had a van to haul away the offenders. All the nearby streets were cordoned off. It lasted maybe 2 hours at most.

Thank goodness for my dental problems and I had to put off the trip for a month or so..........I would have been right in the middle of everything. Tonight would have been my arrival night and I know I would have been hanging out in the Del Ray and walking back and forth between the Monkey Bar, New York New York, Key Largo and the Del Ray.

Not like it is a big surprise since the Local Papers, & this board posted there would be sweep in the next 72 hours.... If you were caught without your papers than its no fault then our own..

Only question is did they actually make an effort to go after the Scum that occupies the space acrosss the street that has been causing so many problems or did they do the standard politicaly correct sweep centering on ilegal gringos and workers at the Rey....

Hope everyone from this community is in good shape and enjoying the night regardless.

Right now the right side of my face is swollen, breath smells like I have been eating shit sandwiches for a week, and on 4 advils every 8 hours and 2 vicodans every 4 hours.

Dry socket is what it is called.

What really hurts is one of my very best friends from Houston is making his virgin trip tonight with another guy who I was just introduced to and one of his best buddies. It's Satin (well known Houston guy) and Quitestorm and I had every intention to seeing they had a good time. I sure hope Satin and Quitestorm did not get caught up in all the bullshit tonight, they are staying in the general area of all the police activity tonight.

Were they hauling away gringos as well? I always carry a photo copy of my passport, which is laminated, but I don't carry the entrance stamp. I assumed they could always punch your passport number into the computer to get the entrance date. Is this a bad assumption?

Don't you need the “immigrations entry stamp” on the photo copy of your passport also to be excepted by the police.

Hey guys, I was inside HDR Thursday night. Around 10:30 pm, a tica was telling people that migración was arriving later in the evening.

It appears that many people, including Don Manuel knew beforehand that the raid was happening. Don Manuel could be seen looking out at the door frequently and impatiently.

After hearing the rumor about migración, I just took-off to El Pueblo. I had a copy of my passport with me, but just wanted to avoid the hassle.

No wonder there were so many Colombianas at El Pueblo tonight!

I got a call early this morning from a chica that works in the HDR. Said they apprehended a Tica who was stealing credit cards from gringos and using them to buy everything from drinks to clothes. FWIW.

I knew it was a good idea to stay home last night. I am going into town today and will try to find out what is really going on. From the reports here,it appears that the police have lived DOWN to all our expectations. IThe problems have been occuring OUTSIDE the DR and not inside. Also no one mentioned whether the Immigration Police were involved. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt and see if they follow through and clean up the area of the BAD GUYS.

I am not aware of any gringos that were hauled away. I did not go back in later after the raid, but was told it appeared to be "business as usual."

You should carry a copy of the main info page of your passport as well as the date stamp page, to avoid any problems. The copy shop across from the News Cafe will do it in business card size and laminated for 400 colones.

Bad assumption. Even if it is possible to get your entry date from a computer that would be done at the migracion police station while you are in custody. They might get to you in an hour or maybe 4 or 5. Want to sit in a Costa Rican jail while they do that?

The procedure worked out between the US and CR governments require you to have a copy of both your passport and the entry stamp. It is a wise idea to also have a copy of your boarding pass as this shows the date of your flight into CR as well as your name. Some migracion police are suspicious of entry stamps as they have no way to tell if it was copied from your passport or someone else's. You also can make a copy of your passport ID page and have it stamped on arrival at the airport. This way you have an original stamp not a photo copy.
