I'm exposing myself to more reggaeton and I'm finding songs that I definitely like, like some of the stuff by Tocarte Toa and Tito "El Bambino" but I gotta say that IMHO there definitely isn't enough variation in the genre and many of the songs sound very much alike. I like a large variety of musical genres, and am not prejudiced against reggaeton, but I think that more imagination is need to expand the genre and bring some fresh sounds into it.

The chicas definitely love it though, and it's great for getting friendly and having a cocktail with them. As others have said above it's definitely not the best music for sexo though.

Amazing how many ex musicians there are among us. Always
ex, of course, as exemplified by the following story.

St. Peter stands at the Pearly Gates, up walks a man.
St. Peter: Ok, one question before I let you in. How much money did you make last year?
Man: I made 300 thousand, but look, I was a doctor, I saved lives, worked my ass off to get into medical school and donated time to free clinics.
St. Peter: Okay, I guess you are ok. Next? How much did YOU make?
Man 2: I made 500k, but I was a developer. I helped hundreds of families own their own homes.
St. Peter: Well, I don't know but I guess you can go in. Next? How much did YOU make?
Man 3: I made 7 thousand.
St. Peter: Oh really, what instrument do you play?

Ok, now what was my point? Oh yeah. Personally I don't much worry about mood music because I don't see that I gain anything by playing background (or foreground) music that makes them want to dance. Or sing along. I truly doubt that having dance music going is going to convince them to stick around longer or respond more or whatever it is you're after.

I'm at the age (57) where most modern music sounds bad to my ears, even if it's done well. It just doesn't evoke any feeling in me. But having said that, I don't mind anything at a tolerable volume. For some reason bar after bar insist on having the music at 11. The Monkey Bar is one of the worst. The guy putting the money in the box is enjoying himself but everybody else is screaming to order a drink. Damn, I'm getting old.

Ok, I'm done now. That felt good. Onward.

Bilko,

What do you call a musician with no girlfriend?

Homeless.

I agree about the volume thing. Perhaps it's because my ears have become much more sensitive after losing my eyesight, but I actually hurt from too much volume. Pantera Rosa is terrible in this regard; empty club and the deejay will still push 130 decibels through the system.

When I heard that the SL had recently employed a band, and that the three-piece group was offensively loud, I began to rethink my reservations at the Sportsmen's. I'm probably growing old, as well. I can't stand loud, loud music anymore.

I relistened to my entire Reggaetone collection over the weekend, trying to find some redeeming qualities. In fact I did find some good stuff. So, maybe I don't hate the Reggaetone that much after all...just the volume level at which it is often played.

EC,

Yeah, I used to loathe Reggaeton, too...until I got bumped and grinded by my chica in a couple of Puerto Viejo seaside reggae bars. Now, like a Pavlovian dog...I get turned on every time I hear that junk! Go figure...

Just as an add on to ruff's initial post...Panamanian Spanish reggae-rap was one of reaggeaton's building blocks. El General gets the most credit, but there were other Panamanian ragamuffin dudes cranking out tunes in the 80s.

The Colombianas in Colombia love Reggaeton. They seem to go nuts everytime " Lo que Paso", is played in LDV. Seeing the chicas in Colombia's hips and asses gyrate is a treat in itself. And what is nice about LDV, is that for every 30 chicas, there is only 2-3 gringos or euros. There is always one drunked fool either a Euro or Gringo, that is drunk as hell, trying to dance to this music, I guess just like Key Largo, where I have seen dancing even worse than mark madsen's, at the LA Lakers championship rally, I think in 2001...

I actually really started likeing reggaeton in the Domincan republic, this was in 2004, right before it exploded here in the U.S. daddie yankee is probably the guy that put reggaeton on the map in the US, The Dominicans in santo Domingo really know how to dance to it..

I too have about 60 reggaeton tunes on my IPOD.....

let a noob chime in here. im in my 20s, work with all Cubanitas and they LOVE this repetitive basura (garbage). this is why i PRETEND to like it. I'd listen to KC and the Sunshine Band if it got chikas moving their hips! Now don't get me wrong, i truely enjoy hip-hop, rap, reggae, and other sorts of talented latin and urban music. But reggaeton is only made up of dudes that couldnt make it in other forms of music that involve talent and oringinality. But to each his own, I ain't hatin'! IMHO.

El Ciego,

I have my own compiliations that i have put together. It is a two CD set. I would happy to donate a set to the El Ciego get laid Fund!

Also, you can't go wrong with Laura Pausini, RBD, Luis Fonsi, La 5th Estacion, Maria Bestar, Chayanne, Shakira & Marc Anthony!

Let me know if you want the Romantica set!

G.G. -

Yeah, I'd love to add your compilations to my library. I have Muffdiver's excellent collections of romantic and dance music, and the original Magic CD (who has the second?)

If you're going to be in San Jose between 8/25/06 and 9/5/06, I'll get it from you in person! :D Otherwise, I'll PM you with my address info.

Thanks!

P.

Doofang,

Maybe they couldn't make it in another form of music, but I would not mind having Daddy yankee's bankroll.

personally I think HIP HOP is nothing but racist garbage

Dogman,

Ya got me there. I would love to have the $$ and women Daddy Yankee pulls. But I could say the same thing about the $$ and women that Backstreet Boys pull too. Doesnt make either of them good. Either way, you're right. I cant knock the hustle. More power to em. But I can knock that ear-piercing, off-key yelling they do in those songs. At least the chicks in those songs sound hot! As for hip-hop, my whiteboy a$$ loves the stuff. I understand why other don't cuz there is certainly some crappy rap out there and anything that sounds racist, i turn off. I'm into fun-loving rap, ya know "money, cars, hoes, and clothes", homie.

I've been a hiphop fan for the last few years, discovering old school a dozen years too late and just learning some of the newer stuff. Then again, I'm pushing fifty and live in the rural Midwest.

Everything that's been said about Reggaetone is absolutely correct. Chicas love it, it's repetitive, it has a venerable history.

If music was food, Reggaetone would be my once every five years liver and onions. Or perhaps even my once a decade lutefisk. Ya sure, yabetcha!
