On my next trip, I'm considering spending the first half in SJ then hopping over to Cuba. Is there a airline service out of CR that I could take or do I have to exit to another local country then fly into Cuba :?:

I know Cubana flies SJO/HAV twice a week and I think TACA has some flights also.

MYRIVERS,
Wish I had the freedom to do that little side trip. However Gdub doesn't see things our way.

No prob. Just go quietly from CR, have them stamp your visa rather than your passport and then don't tell us about it on-line.

The thing I don't understand is why myrivers is doing it that way, when he doesn't have to. He can fly to Havana from Canada without any legal penalty. He doesn't have to sneak around or do it from a 3rd country on a seperate ticket like we do. I don't think they have any direct flights from Canada, but I don't think they have any non-stops to CR either from there. I do know he can go on a single ticket with 1 stop in Mexico for about the same price as it would cost him to go to CR. OTOH, if he tacks Cuba on to his CR trip it will cost him an extra $300-350.

Taca/Lacsa has 3 direct flights per week (Sun, Wed & Fri) at 6:30AM and the flight takes 4.5hrs. Cubana flies direct twice each week (Sun & Thurs) at 1PM. According to their website their direct flight only takes 2.5 hours. That makes me wonder whether that Taca flight really is direct. You should also remember the 2 hour time difference between SJO and HAV when you do your planning.

I believe the TACA flight is direct going through Panama City. In airline terminology there is a difference between the words direct and non stop.
Direct means no change of planes but the flight may make stops before reaching the final destination.

Cubana goes non stop San Jose to Havana.

Irish,

Well WOS (word on the streets) has it that these are old Russian Jets for the most part. When you taxi down the runway you notice all the turbines out of so many of their jets since they scavenge parts from other jets to keep them flying. Also they can not land at night from what I know because many instruments do not work. It is a little different in Cuba no FAA  ! Noisy jets also.

Hi Prolijo, I was thinking of splitting up my trip between CR & Cuba. I have a buddy who is going to spend the month of Jan/2007 in Cayo Coco. Yes there are plenty of non-stop flights from Canada to Cuba. Fidel has no problems with Canadians visiting his country :) Cuba & DR are the 2 top places for canucks to visit during winter time. Hey they even accept our Cdn dollar in Cuba. My buddy has been to cuba 5 times now and he advises mongering is alive and well down there. No where near the class of SJ, but disco's are the equivalent to KL.

Hi Jmacaula, I've seen connections thru panama city and mexico. But for me, I'd fly direct from Toronto to SJ then hop across to cuba from SJ. Prefer not go have to backtrack to Miami or some place like that.

Hell they even run direct flights in winter time from Sudbury ONT, which is only a 4hr drive south of me. Via sunwing airlines (see www.sunwing.ca).

I didn't see Havana listed as one of the destinations at that sunwing link. However, are you those "direct" flights really don't have a temporary stopover somewhere along the way or, more likely, somewhat out of the way as ID described.

Your logic still escapes me. As far as backtracking or going out of your way is concerned, Miami is one place you definitely wouldn't have to fly through if you were going to Havana. Flying to another nearby Central American country like Panama is far more likely and considering the possible safety condition described for Cubana flights probably well worth the extra 2 hours of travel time. But if you're really that concerned about going out of your way, why go to CR in the first place. Flying from Toronto to Mexico City to Havana is considerably more direct than flying from Toronto to CR to Havana. At least Mexico City is roughly on the same latitude as Havana. CR is clear on the other side.
