Actually I thought Costa Rica did better than most people expected. They did lose. However they were up against one of the better european teams. There was no question they couldn,t handel the germans on offense or defense. Gut I think they put on a pretty good showing

For those who were unable to watch the game :( the AP just posted this recap. :D

Quote:
Germany wins World Cup opener 4-2NESHA STARCEVIC
Associated Press
MUNICH, Germany - Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2 Friday in the opening match of the tournament, hoping to inspire enough confidence in the team for the rest of the World Cup.

Germany captain Michael Ballack missed the game with an injury but striker Miroslav Klose celebrated his 28th birthday by scoring two goals. Paulo Wanchope also had two for Costa Rica.

Defender Philipp Lahm, still wearing a special brace after surgery on his left elbow three weeks ago, curved a shot from the edge of the box in the sixth minute to put Germany ahead.

Lahm cut in from the left and got the space he needed when Luis Marin slipped, leaving Lahm plenty of time to aim his shot into upper corner.

Torsten Frings added the fourth goal for Germany in the 87th.

Earlier, Germany piled on the pressure and Bernd Schneider fired high from close range, but Costa Rica stunned the hosts in the 12th when Wanchope beat the German offside trap and coolly slipped the ball past goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

Germany has well-documented problems in its young and inexperienced defense and its shortcomings were exposed again - while most of Germany's back line was signaling offside with their raised arms, Arne Friedrich was caught behind Wanchope.

It didn't take Germany long to recover.

Schneider broke through on the right in the 17th minute and passed the ball to Bastian Schweinsteiger, who sent a crisp pass to the far post for Klose to knock in.

In the 61st, Klose's header was saved by goalkeeper Jose Porras, but the Bundesliga's leading scorer fired the rebound into the roof of the net.

The Germans couldn't relax, however, after Wanchope's second in the 73rd.

He again beat the offside trap when a through pass caught Germany central defenders Per Mertesacker and Christoph Metzelder off guard. Wanchope was suddenly alone and shrugged off a late challenge by Friedrich to beat Lehmann for the second time.

---

Lineups:

Germany: Jens Lehmann, Arne Friedrich, Per Mertesacker, Christoph Metzelder, Philipp Lahm, Tim Borowski (Sebastian Kehl, 72), Torsten Frings, Bernd Schneider, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose (Oliver Neuville, 79), Lukas Podolski.

Costa Rica: Jose Porras, Michael Umana, Douglas Sequeira, Luis Marin, Gilberto Martinez (Jervis Drummond, 67) Mauricio Solis (Cristian Bolanos, 78), Danny Fonseca, Leonardo Gonzales, Walter Centeno, Ronald Gomez, Paulo Wanchope.

i was in the german embassy in SA watching the game the only costa rican supporter in the place but it was unrealistic they would win alhough it was a good game with great goals ...good start for the world cup....although i am an english supporter will always support costa rica but i think if they finish second and england win their group they will play each other next round but a long way to go for that

A group or us watched from here in Panama...where there were many promotions and empty streets as Panamanians partied probably as much as the Ticos to celebrate the opening of World Cup.

We too agreed the Ticos showed better than expected...but as usual, their lack of defense and ball control cost them too many shots on goal. It was like "Wanchope against Germany". The Ticos need more teamwork...maybe better coaching. They will need more than just Wanchope to get into the next round.

The Panama bars had a hay day today with this opening day. I cant believe the stupidity of CR government banning bars from serving during the game. Another reason NOT to be a bar owner in CR.

I thought maybe that was a rumor about the alcohol in bars. I told people and they thought I was crazy. I know quite a few bars in Jaco that served in the end. Costa Rica hung in but Germany made some really nice goals. Was a fun time though.

I watched in a casino with many of my dealer and Pit boss friends. It was exciting and I even found myself rooting in Spanish! Was very please to see them score. I do agree with another poster about the defense. The Germans seemed very organized and very rarely drifted from the game plan. The acurate passing by Germany showed the difference between European Futbol and the kind played in Latin America.

Did you watch Ecuador beat Poland? I suggest you watch Brazil and Argentina pass the ball, better yet, keep your eyes on Ronaldinho's masterful ball control.
I think Costa Rica could've done better, Germany is not at their usual level, they won't win the cup this time.
US plays the Czech Republic on Monday at 10am

CR did ok with 2 goal, and I was expecting much worse from them.

I watched the other game as well and I must add Ecuador is one tough cookie, and played well. WTF happened to Poland ?

It will be major uphill battle for CR next week, but hey, I'll still be cheering for ticos. GO CR GO !!!!!

It was actually it pretty good game...highest scoring "opening" game in Cup history but I have to say...as much as I was hoping for an upset..that 4th and final goal by Germany was an incredible Goooooooolasso!!!

Germany's plays a really speedy aggressive style of play. Their team doenst really have much for talent.

Costa Rica simply put has no chance.

Go Orange Army! Or the Spaniards!

Spains not even starting Raul! Like WTF? And Morientes isnt even on the team??

I personally dont think Brazil is going to win

I was at the match and the Ticos put a great fight. The germans looked more aggresive throughout the match. Saw the Ecuador game last night, they look good! CR is going to have a tough cup.

I willhave to say that the Germans have been great hosts so far. I was wearing a CR scarf and germans were cheering in suppoprt before and after the match.

Beingin Munich during this event has been priceless.
