Hola amigos,,, About a week ago I was thinking about returning to CR (as always) and the thought hit me that I have no idea of how many mongers to CR there are and furthermore what the economic impact of the mongers would be. To my knowledge and memory I can not recall the number of mongers being discussed here. After a few days of thought I have come up with some estimates that may or may not be even close. First thing to remember is that there is no solid data, facts, or figures to work from to deduce any accurate numbers so one can only offer an opinion based upon personal observations and experiences. Since we are dealing with opinions here and with 7000 members I can only assume that we would likely have 7000 different estimates of the number of mongers. I would like for some of you guys to chip in and refine my estimates based upon your opinions.
The first problem I encounter is that all mongers are not created equal. I have broke us down into 3 very broad categories with muchos sub categories within each. Most mongers would fit in with one or the other of these. 1== heavy duty monger,,,,,2== accidental monger,,, and 3== light duty monger.....
1 Heavy duty.. Most of us would fit here. these are the guys who know the scene, know what to expect and the main reason they are in CR is the babes. These are the guys that stay in the gulch or nearby. Knowing that basically all the rooms in many of the gulch hotels such as the morazan, hdr, sportsmans, and the like are filled with them you can get a number based on the estimated number of rooms in the hotel. My guess is that the presidente is half monger. Then it gets harder as I dont know how to apportion the number of rooms at the non monger hotels so I will guess about 5 % of the rooms in regular non monger hotels will hold mongers. My guess here is that perhaps 500 men come to CR a week as heavy duty mongers averaged out for both the dry and wet season. In addition I would add perhaps 300 long term mongers,,ie the guys who stay for a month or so to include resident expats that actively participate. This figure may be way off.
2.. The accidental monger. These include the surfer dudes and the eco nuts and guys that come to visit CR for other things such as spanish schools or just a plain vacation and have no clue about the scene but find out about it and participate. These are the guys that are delighted to shell out cein thinking its a great deal. I met several (3) guys at my spanish school last january of whom had not the slightest clue of the action and of whom I mentored hopefully never to pay cien. Actually I beleive the CR is full of these guys who find out about it and participate to some extent. In fact,, to think about it,, my first trip to CR was on a cruise ship and even I had no clue. I can only guess that perhaps there is thousands of these guys visiting at any 1 time but maybe 150 guys per week from this category stumble into our paradise.
3,, The light duty monger. These are the guys that live there or visit frequently but only partake once in a while. This could include m men or the guys with not so much money or guys somewhat burned out in the scene,, perhaps the type of guy that visits the BM but usually leave alone. My guess is that there must be thousands of gringos in this catagory and perhaps 100 of them may participate in any given week. Once again I may be way off.

So,, my unscientific estimate of mongers is 500, 300, 150 and 100 == 1050 mongers in CR in any given week x 50 weeks ( deleted 2 weeks Holidays ect) === 52,500 mongers in a years time.
Next is how much economic value can we place to them?? Its easier for the HD mongers because thats what he is here for. If we figure 100 a day( which I think is low and does not include airfare) x average 7 day stay
== $700 per week x 40,000 mongers comes to $28,000000 per year and my figures are very conservative. To the accidental and light duty monger we will just add $100 per week each( because most of their expenses are covered anyway and are not directly related to mongering) x 12500 mongers per year == another $1,250,000 revenue per year. Lets say all together its conservativley pretty close to 30 million just because of us mongers added to CR in a years time.
Ok Guys,, am I way off here?? And I must admit that I have figured way way on the conservative side,, at least in my opinion. There is no way that any of us can accurately forcast our numbers or financial importance but no matter what the actual figures are it an AWFUL LOT of both mongers and money. I welcome any and all revisions and refinements to my figures.
Gracias amigos,, Junkyard Dog,,,, Grande barco pero pequeno biteo
