I haven't been paying much attention to World Cup news but I just found out that Germany plays Costa Rica in the opening match so was wondering whether Costa Rica has much of a chance at all or will this be a total mismatch?

slim to none, and slim has left the building, Germany is the major favorite in that group and is ecpected to get to the final four.

It would be a TREMENDOUS upset if Costa Rica could win this game and the country would go nuts

I will be on the stands with the Ticos. I am not a CR fan but was abole to get a hold of tickets for opening match. If the Ticos win, I will have to run for my life as there will probably be riots and such! hahahaha

Germany ranked 19th in the world... Yes they have home field, but to say CR ranked top 30 has no chance way out of wack.

SEE IT HERE FIRST TICOS WIN TICOS WIN TICOS WIN!

Germany really is not one of the worlds premier football teams. But as they are playing in front of the home crowd and hosting the tournment it is unlikely that the Ticos will win.

They have to win against the other teams in their group, Poland and Ecuador to advance to the second round. That is what counts.

The goal differential is really important also. That is what knocked them out of the last world cup. So if the Ticos keep it close against germany say they lose 2-1 , that is good. Then even if they tie Ecuador or Poland they could advance on goal differential.

The Costa Ric team has looked woeful in the four friendly matches they have played since arriving in Europe. The latest match against really 2nd rate competition was as close as they have gotten to a win. Hopefully this is a "look bad" strategy to make the Germans overconfident as the article mentions.

From Inside Costa Rica this morning:

Quote:
WORLD CUP SOCCER:
Costa Rica Loses to German Amateurs
Four up. Four down. Costa Rica were beaten 3-2 by a German regional team of third, fourth and fifth division amateurs in a World Cup warm-up match on Thursday.

With the exception of first-choice goalkeeper Jose Francisco Porras, who played the first half, Costa Rica fielded mainly substitutes in front of a full house of 9,500 in the town of Sandhausen south of Costa Rica's base in the city of Heidelberg.

Costa Rica plays Germany in the World Cup's opening match on June 9. The other nations in Group A are Poland and Ecuador.

Costa Rica's central defenders Jervis Drummond and Michael Rodriguez failed to mark opponents, who scored easy goals in the fourth, 13th and 66th minutes.

The midfield, led by Christian Bolanos and Randall Azofeifa, could not penetrate the robust German team, but Kurt Bernard scored from a free kick in the 11th minute and Alvaro Saborio converted a late penalty for their second goal.

With yesterday's loss, it makes "friendly" game number four that Ticos have come up short. The first loss came on March 01 when the Ticos lost to Iran 3-1. Then on May 28, the national team lost 4-0 to the Ukranian team and May 30 they dropped 1-0 to the Czechs.

Many believe this is a tactic by the Costa Rican coach so as not to tip their hand against the powerful German team and favored winner of the opening game.

Others have just resigned themselves that the Ticos just plain "suck" and getting to the World Cup is compensation enough.

In any event, come June 9, the entire nation will be glued to a television set to watch.

No no no first of all Costa Rica does not suck at sports. For a country of only 4 million people their success in world football has been nothing short of incredible. Once they even advanced to the second round of the world cup. I think they have an excellent chance of advancing this year also.

The recent games the sele have lost are not important at all. They are like pre season football games ....who cares. We will see how they play on june 9th.... when it counts. I predict germany 2-1.

The country that sucks at sports is Canada. I have played basketball, baseball and football with some and they are so bad it is funny. Eh...
