Is it just me or is Sonny's Tavern the worst run tavern in Costa Rica? The place is always a ghost town whenever I stopped in to have a drink. The owners must not be interested in making any money on their investment.

I agree!

On 2 or 3 different occasions I wanted to check it out. Walked back, and no one was there. I didnt even see a bartender one one occasion, and it was supposingly open.

Is their some special time or am I missing something?

I believe Sonny's is run by someone not affiliated with Hotel Castillo. If so, the title should be Sonny's next to Hotel Castillo.

You are correct. The tavern is owned by Sonny and a partner or two. From my experience it looks like they are not interested in making money.

HOtel CAstillo is a great alternative when staying in the Gulch. I booked a room for about 7 days and they charged me like $277 for the week. Two days in the Presidente came out to $250. I checked back into Hotel Castllo. The reason I made the switch was because there were no rooms available for this particular weekend. Great staff!!

Hmmm ... sounds like a front for something else.

Are Sonny or his partner ever there? I was hoping it would be a reasonable option for an occasional beer or meal.

Sonny and his partner are always there. The waitress, Sonny, partner and sometimes a stragler or two.

On one particular they everyone was excited about a party to be held there the next night, talked about how many people were going to be present. The hired a couple of Ticos to play music. Well on said night I walked into the bar and there was about five people sitting around drinking by themselves. A Tica showed up and she was talking to the bartendar about the bad turn out. Both chicas felt bad about the whole situation. One even mentioned they should have posted flyers or something to let people know about the party. The Tico band just stood around for hours. I felt bad. But if you own a bar you should at least know what you are doing.

Yup, got to agree: Incident Number 1:
Went there for a beer the trip before this past one which ended a day ago, the female bartender tried to short change me, knowingly or unknowingly.

No. 2: There was a flyer at the desk in Castillo about their menu, decided to go there for breakfast, tried to get the waiter's attention, he says "wait a moment", apparently assuming I can't speak Spanish, the Gringo bartender / owner comes out to give him directions to pick up some groceries at the store. I guess the waiter was supposed to tell him I wanted breakfast, but forgot. The Skinny Gringo with the cheesy mustache comes out, stands in front of me for a moment with a dull look on his face, says nothing, and walks away, as if to chase the K*D he sent to the store because he forgot something.

There won't be any strike three, this is Costa Rica afer all and I reserve the right to say: NEXT!!!!!!
