Gentlemen, I use to be a regular on the CR scene a couple years ago, around the time New Fantasy had just opened. Been trying to make a trip the past two years and to make a long story short, been deployed to Iraq twice now and had been home two weeks and Katrina destroyed my home in New Orleans, enough of my sob story!
Is the presidente still the place to stay? Anything else I need to know? Was gonna head down to Quepos for a few days also, is the scene (or lack of) the same there? I'll be down the week of thanksgiving if anyone is organizing any fishing charters also that week let me know.
Pura Vida,
Yertman

yertman,
Welcome (back) to the board. :)
Thank you for your service to our country, and I'm very sorry to hear about your home being destroyed.

So much in CR has changed over the past couple of years, yet so much is still the same. I know things are probably very hectic for you now, but whenever you get some free time, start reading through some of the threads, and you'll be able to get 'caught up' on some of the changes. Regardless of the changes, you'll still have a great time.

One more thing....I'll be in CR the week before Thanksgiving (Nov. 16-20). If you're in town that weekend, it'd be my pleasure to buy you a few drinks.

Best of luck to you,
Mucho Gusto

Changes;

The Presidente now has a dress code for the chicas. It's rather cloudy and is up to how the guard feels at the time weather or not she is admitted.

The hotel Gran Via is closed.

The Hotel Amon Plaza (now the clarion) has instituted a $25.00 chica fee.

The Sportsmens Lodge has grown considerably and is now the place to stay for mongers.

The Del Rey is about the same.

Hotel Castillo in Bario Amon has become popular alturnative for mongers.

Hardy's, long a landmark on Ave. Central is closed.

There is an organized gang who prey on gringos making the walk from the Del Rey to the Presiente. They use a gun.

The Zona Blue has become the massage place.

Oh, yeah, we have a new president - Oscar Aries.

Thanks for your service to our country.

Welcome back

LVSteve

The thought of having to take a taxi from the Del Rey to the Presidente for fear of being held up at gun point is disturbing.

Welcome back Yertman, and I add my thanks for your service. A couple other developments or suggestions for your trip.

Crime is up in general, so you really have to watch your guard. Tourists are increasingly targets...and Mongers in gringo gulch even more so.

Quepos got totally flooded last year during rainy season. It is still potentially a "mud bowl" during the month you are planning to come. A little known alternative I have posted on before is Puntarenas. Some massage parlors and night time cuties are available in a couple establisments previously reported on. Just search my posts on "Puntarenas".

While there are still plenty to choose from, I find the chicas to be getting fatter each year on McDonalds, Burger King and KFC. It will be interesting to hear your take on this after a 2 year haitus.

Good luck and again, welcome back.

YO Yertman:

Ditto to all the changes posted.
Some things have not changed at all.
Circus has still not gotten laid in your two year's absence.
End of Story.
Hope you have a nice trip when you go.

Thanks for all the feedback!

So the Colonel is really around 500 to the $? Seems like the first time I visitied 10 years ago it wasn't even 300? and 2-3 years ago it was high 300s, guess I'm getting old (just turned 30!) In any event shouldn't this stretch our dollar and give us more bang for our buck?? Sounds like the girls are still try to get cien?

I'm gonna watch my back when I'm down there with the crime problems and thinking of just hanging out at the Del Rey since I don't want any unexpected hassles. I'm surprised the Presidente can afford to stay open with their new policy/attitude.

I didn't hear about the problems on the Pacific coast (floods) but I love Quepos and still planning on going, figure I'll feel right at home in another flooded area!
I'm really looking forward to getting down there and making up for lost time! I'm gonna keep browsing the forum to catch up! If anybody is planning on being around the weekend after Thanksgiving count me in for some drinks and gambling. Thanks again gentlemen!
Pura Vida,
Yertman

Yes the chicas are still asking for cien but with some negotiating you will find some quality goods for less.

You will not find much change in your purchasing power based on the colones exchange rate. Inflation has averaged about 14% per year for the past 2 years and the devaluation of the colon has been about 9.5% average. So you dollar will actually buy less than 2 years ago. However, the change will not really be noticeable.

Yertman,
YOU ARE A GREAT AMERICAN ! Thank you for your service protecting our country. I am sorry about the loss of your home. NOLA is a great city. In had the privilege of living there from '69-'71 in the Tulane area while completing my military obligation.
Why not hang out in Jaco and day trip to Quepos. Hotel Paradise is cheap, cash talks and the Copacabana is a good upscale place. Search the Jaco posts for other options. The Beatle Bar and the Monkey Bar rock at night.
Welcome home

Well , I have been coming to San Jose about 2 and a half years now so have a good concept of then a now. The Gringo scene Del Rey, Key Largo and higher prices in these venues and the increased security risk in this area which was about no existent 2 years ago have come along.
We have new places like Zona Blue and Sportsmans Lodge and New Fantasy is open for the second time or is it third, I forget.
Then we have the local scene where little has changed very little prices have increased for inflation but about the same in dollar terms. Sone new places and a some have closed. A lot more places are known and have exposure due to internet resources. That is a summary as I see the scene
