Thanks, ID.......It seems that Mr. Pat Dunn was quite a "pioneering legend" and entrepreneur in San Jose. I'm sure he was an interesting man to know. I'm sorry to learn of his untimely death.

article today makes mention of service/wake to be held by Mr Dunn's family at their home in Barrio Amon later this week.

now there would be a gathering of some legendary old timers.

I just got back from a week in Ecuador. The difference between Ecuador
and Costa Rica is that there are streets (e.g., Morales in La Ronda), in the
central oldest part of Quito that someone like me should never walk
in, even in the middle of the day. Maybe there are sreets in San Jose
that are not safe during the day, but I did not find them, after walking for
miles from the Gulch. The situation at night in San Jose is not so cozy,
though, so you always want to take a taxi.

On the issue of crime, the U.S. State Department is warning visitors
to San Jose that armed gangs are attacking foreigners on the way
into town from the airport. I wonder if this is an exaggeration. But
I have no way of knowing.

Toledoguy would you provide a few more comparative details on Quito and your impressions of the hobbying scene? (Perhaps in this other thread would be more appropriate)- https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewto ... highlight=

Where did you see the warning from the State Dept.? I find no current warnings for CR on their website or other travel warning sites...
Update: nevermind, found it under Consular Information Sheet-
Quote:
The US Embassy in San Jose has received eleven reports from victims of armed robberies of American Citizens and other Nationals since December 2005, most of which involve people coming from the Airport in vehicles between 2200 – 2300 hours. Although not all of these incidents were identical, a consistent theme is a group of masked and armed men (some of whom speak English) either convince or force the driver of a vehicle to pull over. Once the vehicle pulls over, the armed men quickly and methodically rob the occupants of their luggage and other valuables. As of this date, the people committing these armed robberies have not been caught by the Judicial Police.

The information is factual and has been written about in the English language newspapers and possibly the Spanish ones as well. It also has been discussed on this board.

ID I've read nothing about this before this thread, but do remember some posts about this happening in Rio. Do you know are they targeting taxis, rental cars, or just random vehicles leaving the airport?

I wish I knew more, but the trip to Quito was spent mainly with my
ladyfriend. She and I always talk about 3-somes but chicken out. To
be honest, though, the sex with her is always so hot that I have to
be crazy to monger.

But I am crazy, so I sneaked out to the place that seemed the most
highly recommended on an international Board (I'm not sure
I should mention the site here -- is it considered a competitor?).
Anyway, this place Cafe Rojo (unmarked from the street, and a bar
set-up, not a cafe) had about 40 girls working at 3:00 PM, and in looks
they ranged from 3 to a solid 8. The ratio was not so good, with about
25-30 young men, almost all locals. It seemed that the pretty girls were
on tight schedules; as soon as one walked down the stairs a chico grabbed
her and she reversed direction. Unfortunately I was in a hurry and picked
an apparently friendly young lady without doing a good interview.
The room upstairs had a fairly clean-looking bed, but my senorita
doing the BBBJ kept spitting on the floor every minute or so. "Saliva,"
she said. She also tried to upsell to $40, and then she said that the $20
rate was for 20 minutes, not an hour, even though she had clearly said
una hora downstairs. She relented only when I started to put on my pants
and leave. Comically, she kept asking me if I would take her to my hotel
room for a toda la noche (she wanted $80 for this). She had no idea
that she was doing a lousy job. Overall, I would say it was a poor
experience: cheap at $20, but bad sex is worse than no sex.

Guys on that other Board talk about getting laid for $10 in various
apartments, but then they say that it was for 20 minutes. One last thing
is that my ladyfriend and I saw quite a few streetwalkers in various
neighborhoods, including a nice neighborhood, but they were
unattractive 2-4s and they tended to have pimps lurking about. There
was nothing there to tempt us to try the elusive 3-some, so I had to
settle for daily, mind-blowing one-on-one anal sex while looking at
snow-capped volcanoes in the distance. I had a great time because of the
ladyfriend, but I don't think I'd return to Quito just for mongering. On the
other hand, I certainly did not do a thorough exploration; because of the
lack of info, I probably would not have posted this except that PacoLoco
requested it.

The article in the Tico Times (TT April 28, 2006 Page 5) indicates that there were 15 attacks in 2006 on rental cars. They do not mention any attacks on taxis or resident tico's cars.

I had the honor of attending the wake for Mr Dunn and there was a crowd of locals and not a dry eye in the house.

The ladies were distraught.

I never met Mr Dunn, but from all the newspaper articles, conversations with his friends and acquantices, pictures of him at various times in life on the walls of the veiwing room, etc....I can understand the sorrow of his passing.

My condolences to his family and friends for the loss of such a fine and compassionate man.
