Reactivate Expired AAdvantage Miles



reactivateAAmilesSM - Reactivate some or all of your expired AAdvantage miles

For a limited time, you can reactivate some or all of your expired AAdvantage miles and use them to claim awards. Through this special offer, you can extend the life of expired miles and quickly boost your available mileage balance.

Eligibility
Miles that expired on or after December 31, 2002 are eligible for reactivation
There's no limit to the number of expired miles you can reactivate
The price to reactivate miles is $50 for every 5,000 miles, plus a $30 processing fee per transaction, per account
This offer is available June 27, 2005 - June 30, 2006


Reactivate Miles by Phone Or Email
Phone requests - Contact AAdvantage Customer Service at (800) 421-0600
Email your request to AAdvantage Customer Service by selecting the Contact AA tab at the top of this page
Include credit card information with all email reactivateAAmiles requests
Reactivate rates are $50 for every 5,000 miles (or any portion thereof)
Fees apply to all mileage reactivations - a $30 processing fee per transaction, per account

Example:
Reactivate 24,500 miles from one account for a cost of $280. That's a $250 mileage reactivation fee and a $30 transaction fee.
Reactivate 5,000 AAdvantage miles for $80. That's a $50 mileage reactivation fee and a $30 transaction fee.

You have until June 30, 2006 to reactivate expired miles and make them available for award redemption. If you're looking to increase your account balance or quickly gain miles needed for an award, then reactivateAAmiles may be the way to go!


Reactivated AAdvantage miles will be credited to your account as a mileage bonus and do not count toward elite status qualification. Please allow 72 hours for the miles to post to your account. You will have at least 36 months in which to redeem reactivated miles for an award. Reactivated miles will not expire as long as your account has qualifying activity in any 36-month period.

That's a penny a mile, plus a $30 processing fee, for miles you've technically already earned. I don't think this is a deal.

Keep an eye on your miles and don't let them expire. It's as easy as participating in a "partner" activity every 2 years (check your programs actual requirements), which could be as cheap as sending flowers or purchasing a DVD.

Depends on your miles count for your next reward. If you have, say, 26,000 and need 4K for that next comp ticket to CR then paying $80.00 for the miles instead of around 300.00 to 400.00 for a ticket then its well worth it unless your saving for more. It's an option and a not really a bad deal.

It's a bad deal. But it should be a moot point because there is no good reason to let your miles expire.

For me or anyone at the higher elite levels it makes more sense to pay the $300 to $400 and earn the miles and wait to use them for a much more expensive ticket. It's also the opportunity cost of losing out on the mileage bonuses, the free upgrades to first class and achieving elite status for the following year.
