Im a fellow Canuck and you dont need anything other then your passport and the papers they provide on the plane for customs/immigration.

As far as hotels, Ive stayed at neither but Ive seen inside the best western. Its a bad area at night, so use cabs. During the day time its easily walkable to the main action.

Gran Via is on Ave Central which is much closer to the action and "safer" at night. Its kind of located amidst some public area, with bench's, lots of lighting, and even a good police presence in the evening.

Ive never stayed there but it looks to be a nicer hotel.

dude, check out the costa rica embassy website

Quote:
VISA REQUIREMENT: none

LENGTH OF STAY: maximum of 90 days

All adults and Ch*ldren require the following documents to enter Costa Rica:

A passport valid for at least 30 days (expiration date has to be 30 days or more after arrival date). In the case of minors, if they do not have a passport, they should be included in the passport of one of the parents.

A pre-paid airline ticket to exit Costa Rica (either to return to your country or to go to another country)

this was posted for canadian passportholders.

also, while the Gran Hotel is a classic hotel and well located, I do not believe it allows female, short term guests.

But you can always visit the MP's or use short term joints like Hotel Asia.

I wouldn't put off a trip top CR because I had to stay at the Gran

Gran Via is closed so assume he was speaking of the Gran Hotel Costa Rica which does not allow you to bring a "guest" to your room. Best Western would be a much better choice.

Each company or hotel operator has the right to adopt their own policies.

The Gran Hotel CR allowed guests under the previous owner. The new owner changed that policy. Whatever his motivation was that was his business decision. It is not a matter of charging a fee they do not charge and do not allow the practice.

The operators of the Best Western adopted a different policy. Perhaps it is based on their less desirable location but that is conjecture on my part not fact.

I stayed at the Best Western Downtown in Feb.

No chica fee, she just has to show her cedula and they record it in a big ledger.
The place is adequate if you can't find anything else. $60 + tax. Includes a small breakfast. It's about 11 blocks from the Del Rey.

Do a search, this info has been posted just in the last few days.

As long as you remember that The Best Western is located in the "Zona Roja" and you ALWAYS take a taxi at night it should work out.

As previously posted they are chica friendly. Enjoy

Stayed at Best Western on my first trip in January 05, Great room service and never charged for a chica. I'll say this once, DO NOT WALK around after dark, very shady neighborhood. 7 trips later and have found the Morazon to be very central located, 1 block from the DR and the Pres. Always call the Morazon ahead to make sure everything is set. Get a confirmation code. Only issues I've found is the water has a mind of its own and the elevator has been down on occasion. No chica fee's. Oh, one other thing, DO NOT BOOK thru Roberto, he's a helper only but he thinks he runs the place.
