On both trips to CR many places did not want to exchange $100 bills beginning with the letters CB. So, if you are bringing cash check your bills before you arrive in Country.

Why would you need $100 bills, unless you're paying cien? :roll:

I always take 20's to CR, 100's everywhere else. Never had a problem yet

Not everywhere else has a problem like Central America with fake bills. It is not unique, but more of a problem than elsewhere.

I had a situation where I had unknowingly gave a fake 5000 colone note to a chica as a propina. She stopped at a mercado on her way home to buy some food for her bebe and they would not accept it. She came back to my hotel with the fake note and told me what had happened. I took it back and gave her another one.....a real one.

Counterfiet colones are a problem. This article was in the Saturday May 13, 2006 edition of Inside Costarica.

In a small apartment in downtown San José, a 42 year old man, identified only by his last name, Pérez, has a counterfeiting operation going until police busted in on him yesterday.

An joint operation by the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) and the Policía Municipal (San José police), raided the man's apartment and discovered equipment to falsify ¢2.000, ¢5.000 and ¢10.000 notes.

Police say that the man used a colour laser printer with special ink to produce the counterfeit bills, along with graphic art materials, paper and cutters.

Found in the man's apartment was ¢800.000 worth of phony bills, which police theorize were being passed in smaller rural communities, like San Ramón, Atenas and Zarcero. Several "front" men, were used to pass the phony bills to make purchases.

The OIJ said it had been on the trail of Pérez since last March when they detained two men in Atenas with some ¢300.000 in false bills. A week later OIJ agents arrested a man in Zarcero with ¢130.000 in counterfeit notes, which led police to Pérez and his whereabouts.

Police added that the men detained in Zarcero and Atenas told them that they had purchased the bills in San José, saying that they would by a ¢10.000 bill for only ¢2.000.

I was changing my colones back to US dollar on my last trip, when the girl at the casino told me 2 of my 5000c bills were fake. I couldnt even tell the difference!

I guess its pretty normal though, they dont make you fill out any papers or anything, just call security over and they ask where you got the bills from and what not.

The fake 5000 colone note I unknowingly gave the chica appeared to have "made the rounds" as it was a well worn bill. I have since learned how to tell the real from the fake.

A metallic like line that goes from top to bottom, embedded in the fabric of the bill.

The subsequent problem is that the old bills don't have the strip. There are actually about 5 different things built in on the newer bills, such as dots that can be seen with a blacklight. But some of the fake ones even have those.

Some of the fake one's even include a fake metalic strip, but I've never seen a fake one with the right printing on the metalic strip. It should have written the denomination of the bill 10,000, etc, and something like BRRC. The metal strip is small and the print on it even smaller, obviously. But you can hold it up to the light and usually get comfortable with it. Check out a good newer bill and you'll see what I mean...if not, hand it to your wingman with better eyesight to check.

The most secure thing I knew of as of a year ago was a pen that looks like a highlighter. You make a mark with this special pen. If the mark turns black, don't accept the bill. They sell them for a couple bucks at the stores that sell paper, pens, etc.

Sounds like an iodine pen. I see them being used all the time at WAL-MART.

So the same counterfit pen that you buy at Wal Mart also work on colones?
