I know this has been discussed ad nauseum on this board many times, but found this article on MSNBC.com and thought It to be relevant to the board. It's the first time I've read how other cultures see us, and think it may be usefull to repost it here.

the article reads as follows:

WASHINGTON - Alarmed by the relentless rise of anti-Americanism around the world, a business-backed group is trying to change the behavior that spawned an enduring stereotype of Americans abroad — loud, arrogant, ill-dressed, ill-mannered and lacking respect for other cultures.

For many years, much of the rest of the world distinguished between the United States and the American people. Americans tended to get better ratings than their country and its policies. But recent surveys show that favorable perceptions of Americans have been shrinking while views on the world’s only superpower grow increasingly hostile.

Enter Business for Diplomatic Action Inc. (BDA), a non-profit organization founded by advertising executive Keith Reinhard after a worldwide survey of attitudes towards Americans convinced him that “our collective personality is one of the root causes of anti-Americanism.”

“We are seen as loud, arrogant and completely self-absorbed,” said Reinhard, chairman emeritus of the advertising agency DDB Worldwide. “People see in us the ultimate arrogance — assuming that everybody wants to be like us.”

Tips of travelers
This month, San Francisco-based BDA — whose board includes executives from Exxon and McDonald’s — began distributing a “World Citizen’s Guide” to corporate travelers. Its 16 points are a mirror image of the behavioral patterns that earned Americans a boorish reputation in the first place. Here’s a sampler from the guide.

Think as big as you like but talk and act smaller. In many countries, any form of boasting is considered rude. Talking about wealth, power or status — corporate or personal — can create resentment.
Speak lower and slower. In conversation, match your voice level and tonality to the environment and other people. A loud voice is often perceived as bragging. A fast talker can be seen as aggressive and threatening
Dress up. You can always dress down. In some countries, casual dress is a sign of disrespect. Check out what is expected and when in doubt, err on the side of the more formal and less casual attire. You can remove a jacket and tie if you are overdressed. But you can’t make up for being too casual.
Listen at least as much as you talk. By all means, talk about America and your life in the country. But also ask people you’re visiting about themselves and their way of life. Listen, and show your interest in how they compare their experiences to yours.
Not good at listening
“We Americans just don’t listen,” said BDA’s executive director Cari Eggspuehler. “Listening is not an American trait.” Eggspuehler traveled the world when she worked for the U.S. Department of State before joining BDA.

More than 400 companies have expressed interest in the World Citizens Guide. Ten thousand copies have already been distributed and 30,000 more are now being printed under sponsorship from the National Business Travelers Association which works with BDA to push the initiative.

A proposal to the State Department to issue the guide along with every new or renewed U.S. passport is still under review, according to Eggspuehler.

The new guide for corporate executives follows similar but more detailed tips for U.S. students traveling abroad. Compiled by BDA and students at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, that guide was sponsored by PepsiCo and handed out to more than 200,000 students.

An estimated 60 million Americans travel abroad each year and BDA’s Reinhard sees all of them as potential ambassadors who might win the hearts and minds of their host countries, no matter how much people there might hate U.S. policies.

When word of the new guide first filtered onto Internet discussion groups, some participants were quick to point out that American travelers have no monopoly on boorish behavior.

Nice post and I support the effort. We will get along better in the world if we dont expect everyone to understand or accept our sometimes "boorish" behavior. I sometimes think the only reason I was not robbed in my almost 4 years of hanging out in the gulch and other even more dangerous places in Costa Rica...was that I tried not to dress or act like a typical gringo. I think there is something to our shorts, tshirts and thongs routine that stick out like a sore thumb in San Jose and elsewhere. It sends an indirect message of "come rob this rich gringo because I dont give a damn"...
Sure, at the beaches this is fine and approriate attire. But, in the Latin cities, we stick out like a sore thumb...with our fanny packs and camera cases. It's like arabs or foreign women wearing a burka or black robed clothing in our culture...it really sticks out. yet our insistance on our fashion has nothing to do with modesty or religion. I know some of you will flinch or cringe at this statement...but it is my honest opinion. Lets try to understand and respect other peoples cultures and traditions a little more if we are traveling in THEIR homeland. Of course, nobody wants to see MY boney white hairy legs anyways...

Hi Tman, for us newbies...in your opinion...what is the 'proper' and accepted dress code for a tourist (aka CRTer) who will be wondering around the SJ streets?

Good question (though I see you;re not that much of a newbie  ). You will find that a moving target wherever you go. For example, people dress up more in Panama City than in San jose, so you would want to go up a notch there versus San Jose. In San Jose, my opinion is nice jeans and a golf shirt are widely respected in most restaurants or social occasions. You will hardly ever find a grownup Tico or Panamanian (Mexican, Honduran, etc etc) in shorts and a tshirt around the city. Let alone flip flops. So, my suggestion is...look around at the locals and try and emulate their level of dress as much as possible. Not saying we cant maintain an element of our gringo styles, but it is more about formality vs informality. To really know the culture, we need to blend with it as much as possible. And for safety/security, it is good to do so as well,

I have to say my experience shows Tman is right on the mark with his two posts. I have never had any problems either which I attribute to his way of thinking here. His dress code is what I use also. Simple for me try to dress like the natives & blend in as much as one can & don't be loud showing off your insecurities!

This website could be viewed by many as the ugly American attitude. Many could view this as such one would think as we throw our dollars around & take advantage of women in a less fortune economic condition while we discuss openly about them. I don't really see it as this since we are the only help some of these poor souls my recieve & it is what it is. We did not make it this way & after all it is a trade of service. Just a thought??

Seriously I wonder if they will post an online version of the “World Citizen’s Guide” and how it relates to the non-corporate travelers?

Tman, thanks for your advice. Well taken. The only concern is dressing like a local is great, but my white skin still is a dead give away. More snow then sun up here in the great white north. Tanning booth might help cover my tracks

MyRivers, Tman is right on. Leave the getto outfits, shorts, Tommy Bahama shirts and sport jerseys at home. Nothing says "take me I'm an obnoxious idiot" more than dressing like a rapper or some country hick from the Jerry Springer show. Think business casual for evening wear, jeans and nice t-shirt or collard pullover for daytime. smile a lot and leave the expensive, bling bling at home as well. That said, learn a little espaniol; at least please, thank you, do you speak english, excuse me, I'm sorry, etc... It goes a long way in showing respect of culture. and just might lower the chica price as well as enhance the GFE.

Xman, I've been looking for an on-line version as well but it's elusive at the moment. If anybody has access to one, by all means post it. I'm sure it would be appreciated by all. Also heard the State Department is considering issuing a copy with all new and renewed passports. Would'nt that be a great idea? i'm all for it.

Tman, its been awhile. Are you calling Panama home?

See I have to argue a bit here.

At my age I think its wrong to dress up "fancy". How many tico's, or tica's my age dress up in the evening? Ive hit some local spots and they all seem to be wearing the same stuff I have on.

If I were to wear dress pants, and a tucked in button up shirt I think I would be overdressed for SJO.

Jmacaula,
You have a point. Age & dress are obviously going to be somewhat different. Think the reality of our dress makes a statement about you & what you want to project about yourself & attract to yourself?? Just remember it may be wiser to start neutral since you are on there turf until you get a feel for them.

PapaNut, your points are very valid. By the way..who is Jerry Springer ?
In Canada we've banned that crap  Plus I'm too old to dress like a rapper. Now Neil Young's style....more like it. Yes he is still a canuck!

I think the muggers can pick out the less suspecting tourist pretty quick. Despite the clothes on your back.

Attitude and the manner in which you present yourself are as important as dress in how other view you as well.

Myrivers, sounds like your my kind of wingman 8) FYI, Jerry Springer was a successful news commentator in Cincinnatti, who was elected mayor of the city. His political base became large enough that he made a serious run for Governor of the state. He was one of the youngest candidates and a contender for the office until he was outed by the media; seems he's one of us after all! Caught paying a prostitute with a personal check. Needless to say, his political career ended and the rest is history.

If we cross paths in SJO, I'd be happy to twist one up with ya, put our shades on and marvel at the wonder of it all.
