Hi Guys,

Im thinking about making a weekend trip to CR this Thursday. My problem is that I will need some reliable Internet access for work. Can any of you comment on the WiFi at Sportmans Lodge, El Presidente or even the DR? Also if there are other hotels that I should look at that have good WiFi please let me know!

Thanks in advance,

-MrM

I can tell you it has been spotty at LaAmistad the past few days. It was out here, but when I walked down to SL theirs
'S was working.

Zona 2 , ScoreS and SL all have strong wifi in almost all locations.

Zona 2 and ScoreS will have the best combination of cute girls on-site and strong wifi.

Join CRT. You will save more than the CRT fee in just one weekend (or in one day) with discounts on the ground.

The Presidente does NOT allow guests in your room.

Wifi in the HDR is spotty in the lobby. ML is spotty unless your room is at either end of a hall.

Also note Scores also has for hotel guests a US I.P. Address, that means your Pandora , HBO GO , Iheart radio and Amazon (ect) all work like In the US. With a CR I.P. They won't.

Sportsmens has good access throughout the hotel. The problem that you are going to have is that this is the rainy season. The rainy season means that you are probably going to get one or more significant storms during your stay. During severe storms it is possible (very) that any of the hotels can lose their internet connection (and cable and satellite feeds) for a period of time.

As long as you are patient, the connections are usually restored pretty quickly but if you are having to respond to email etc. for work in real time, it can get a bit frustrating. Just set the expectation with the folks at the other end that you might need an hour or two to respond to their emails.

One aspect of the internet here this time of the year is the afternoon storms we have been having almost every day lately. No matter who the provider is, nor where the location is, you can lose your internet access frequently. In the area where I live lightening struck ISE's system recently, and we have been having outages 2-3 times a day and every time it rains. They also seem to continually have more problems than other providers!

What I am trying to say is it does not always depend on which hotel you are in this time of the year. It is a weather problem that causes more problems than anything else.

depending on how important it is that you maintain connectivity, purchase a cheap quad-band phone and get a local sim card for data services. Then tether. Just pay attention to your VPN considerations (if you are using a VPN). I have had repeated issues with ISSec rotating keys over Claro. If you require this, then look into Kolbi or Movistar. I have no experience with them, so do not know if the same thing exists.

There is no need to WiFi at Amistad: Use a CAT5 cable to connect and avoid WiFi issues. Travel with your own CAT5 cable, but Amistad desk will have a set most generally if other people aren't using them. Heck, one trip, MATT, the owner, gave me his to use.

However, when the internet is down in that section of the Barrio.....don't matter whether it's WiFi or hard wire.....it's down.

Still, just ask Carlos at the front desk if he has an extra CAT5 cable and if he do, it is yours. Not to be hating, but you're just being silly not to travel with your own 3meter long CAT5 cable. 8)

Not bad advise and I generally have one with me if I bring my laptop, along with security cable as my "work" laptop is too big to fit into 90% of hotel safes. But when I am travelling light with just my tablet that just doesn't work for me.

Not knocking Amistad as I am becoming a regular there, but anywhere I stay if they say they have wi-fi I expect to receive what is advertised. If the internet provider is down, that's another matter. Was I irritated that the wi-fi was down, yes. Was I irritated that the house computer for guest use was inoperable during my stay, yes. Was I irritated that I had to walk to the SL in a downpour to have internet access, yes. However, I realize shit happens and sometimes it happens all at once, so you go with the flow.

I did learn that their wi-fi problems were of a human nature, a desk clerk who didn't know how or didn't care to reset a modem. But that appears to have been rectified as I understand she is no longer employed there.

Excellent advice on dead-cheap insurance/assurance. Not to pimp the merch but here's an online source (including more on why it's a good idea).: http://www.cablesforless.com/5-Foot-Cat ... 8C247.aspx

Very good point Bash. I use tethering as a backup. The problem is that you never know when the cell phone connection is going to deteriorate. In order to have good VoiP and a consistent VPN, the connection needs to be free of Jitter and Latency as much as possible. My experience shows that for the cell phones, it varies and one reason can be the number of users on the tower. Plus many more reasons that I don’t know of. It even happens in an LTE area that averages 40 Mb DL/UL and is my hometown in New Jersey,

I’m traveling now and using a Local SIM in Morocco. The cell phone is a Samsung Galaxy S5 with a local SIM and serves as a backup for my ADSL.

I'll be arriving in San Jose on November 9, and staying at Scores for one week. First thing, I'll simply swap the Moroccan SIM with the one from Kolbi but that will still be my backup. I'm expecting the connection at Scores to be my primary and working the way it has been described to me.

Scores is a good, friendly home base. When it gets slow, you're only a short walk away from all the other pickup spots. Wifi there is champion.
