I was mentioning the housekeeper job soley as an example, although I do find a lot of chicas that wind up doing that.
Like KC said, while finding a job in CR for those with a cedula may be easy, finding a job that pays anywhere near what they were making before is rather difficult.
I have met chicas at the Del Ray and other places who were doctors, lawyers, teachers, students and some who spoke 3+ languages well. However the VAST majority have very few marketable job skills. Many don't have a high school diploma. They have enough basic skills to land a job outside of the gulch, but the average tico salary is $3000, which brakes down to $250 per month. Lets give them the benefit of the doubt and say with their English skills, they are making $500 per month or about $6000 per year.
Now lets compare that with their previous puta salary. Let's say that they are not one of the Del Ray Moneymakers who is pulling in $300 a day. In this example, I'll use a tica I know who ONLY works at the garden's bar and grill next to the Castillo. She is there usually every day for about 5-6 hours. Lets say she gets one customer most days and maybe 1 or 2 days a week she goes away emtyhanded. She can be had for $40 although sometimes guys over pay (but rarely cien). My bet is she brings in MINIMUM $250 a week, which is $1000 per month and $12000 per year.
This is a tica who has been hooking since she was 14 and has virtually no other job skills. But for 35 hours per week, of which she is sitting at the bar talking and drinking cofee for 30 an actually phucking for maybe 5, she brings in a fairly high tico salary. She is making a little over $7 per hour.
Here is a brakedown of the minimum hourly wages here as of 2006 for various skill levels:
Non-Qualified Worker: US$ 1.81
Semi-Qualified Worker: 1.96
Qualified Worker: 2.11
High School level technicians 2.27
Specialised Worker 2.43
College technicians 2.80
Bachelor Degree 3.43
“Licenciatura†Degree 4.11

The avarage computer programmer salary in this country is between $10,000-15,000. So this chica is making about as much as a guy who went to university for a computer science degree. My bet is that this chica's salary is more in line with girls working the morning shift at the del ray, second and third tier girls during the evening shift, and girls who work the smaller bars. Other than bartending, I really cannot think of any job the majority of those ticas can get that will pay them anywhere near what they were making before.
Now we could argue that regular jobs are a better deal in the long run, especially as she gains additional job skills, since her income will only declne the longer she is hooking. But most aren't looking long term anyway.
