Flanative- provided you and your friend exercise reasonbale caution (as you would if in Miami or Chicago), you will have a great time. This board lets you know where to go, what to expect, etc and is a great resource.
There are plenty of places to relax and get a drink, or a meal. I would not make your first trip a 10 day stay, but you and your friend would have a blast. Even not knowing Spanish. :D

I would just tell you to go...stay with your friend most of the time, possibly meet up with some guys from CRT, and just enjoy yourself. I made a solo mission after about a year speaking NO spanish and had no problems.. Just stay sober enough to make quality decisions.

I was alot more scared when I lost my friends near Dream nightclub in Wash. DC at 3:00am than I ever have been walking around the gulch.

Just stick with someone you know and find a couple of CRT brothers.

I promise you if you do this, your biggest question will "When do I go back?""

Take care

After reading posts about Dengue I would recommend bug spray. Also stay away from Puchos and women with adams apples!!!

Hello Flanative, and welcome to costaricaticas! :D

Security: Remember that you'll be visiting a developing country, and many folks in Costa Rica have less money than you. Muggings/robberies are a possibility everywhere in the world, but in Costa Rica there's also what I call the "gouge the gringo" mentality: taxi drivers that refuse to use the meter and overcharge, strip clubs that pad your bill, restaurants/bars that pad your bill etc. Forewarned is forearmed however, and there's plenty of info here to help you avoid being robbed or cheated.

Is there anything to do when you're not screwing? Yes, although most of C.R.'s lure is in its outdoor activities. There are day trips that don't involve monkeys or zip-lines, including tours of coffee plantations, a beautiful waterfall park, a couple volcanoes, even hot springs where you can bathe in mineral waters.

In town, there are a gazillion bars. I know that the Sportsmen's Lodge and the Monkey Bar both have pool tables. Local bars offer fairly inexpensive beer and drinks. Food is cheap compared to U.S. prices.

Welcome again to the Forum. Do a little research, ask questions if you can't find the info you need.

Overall I would say, like that guy on "The Price is Right..."

"COME ON DOWN!" I guarantee you that you and your buddy will have the time of your lives! :D :!:

San Jose is like any major city in the world. There are certain areas that are almost 100% safe at anytime and there are other areas that are almost 100% dangerous at anytime. The vast majority of the city is safe to walk around during the day but it is recommended that you take a taxi at night. Most likely the majority of your time will be in the gulch or the downtown core so you will not have any problems. Your two biggest chances for being ripped off will be by chicas and pick pockets and some common sense and reasonable caution will thwart them

There are a lot of places to hang out and have a drink with other gringos. While there are available companionship at the SL, HDR, ZB, etc. you can also just hang out and enjoy a drink and conversation with other guys. SL, NYB & Monkey Bar all have pool tables if that what you like to do and there are casinos if you like to gamble.

Plenty of places to eat with varying types of food and prices. Going with a wingman is an advantage and you will meet up with like minded guys.

As has been stated in previous posts when it's over and you are heading home you will be planning and scheming how to make your next trip as quickly as possible.

As the old TV ads for Northeast Airlines you to say..........

COME ON DOWN!

Was typing my post when you posted yours so I had not seen it. Did not mean to steal your "Come on down line" .

Guess "great minds" come up with the same "great lines"

I came down solo one year ago exactly. I had the time of my life and now live here with a beautiful 22 year old lady I met on the 1st day here. I was a cop in a major city for 25 years, believe me, with reasonable precaution, you are as safe or safer than you would be in any U.S. downtown area. During the day, you can pretty well go anywhere. At night, take a cab from your hotel to whereever you would like to go. The women here are not depicted as they actually are. The average CRT member is not a great photographer and the photos are generally after an hour or two of non-stop sex. The women here are extremely nice on the average, fun to be with, and great looking. I'd say stay at home and hord them to myself but, at my age, one is all that I an handle. I met a fellow CRT member at the SL the other day who was looking for his final sessions of his two week trip. He had already surpassed 60. Now thats an athlete. Great for him.

Hey flanative if your gonna be in san jose between august 11-25 /07 .
Maybe you can hook up with me and we can check out those other places for something to do during the daytime. Yep be my first time also . But I've been doing months of investigating where to stay / what to see /where to find lots of good pu*sy /Plus found some unlisted places with awhsome girls who are cheap(meaning under $50 for allnight fun)
As for places to eat oh heck they have HARVEYS/BURGER KING/etc as well as other places to eat. My hotel has a good place right next door to eat at and I was told that lots of chica's go by there or even eat there . So might be worth a look to check it out.
And no I barely understand a few words in spanish but what the heck I'm single /horny & theres lots of women down there who needs some firmbear to pleasure them . And I am staying for 14 days ! And I might chase women every day or chase them at night and then site see in the day time. Hey buy me a beer and I'll tell you about someone I found who is stayin in my same hotel !LOL

Flanative,

I understand your concerns. I have mongered in Thailand, P I. Dom Rep. Columbia, Brazil and CR.

You just need to be cautious. Like El Ciego said just like a big US city. If it is something you have not read about on here and it does not feel right trust your gut. Limit your risk take cabs at night. I have found walking in the day to be fine.

What you will love aboiut the CR is its convenience. It is a short flight if you are on the east coast or central US. It is cheaper than the US and legal which is a huge draw for me. It is safe to drink the water, no power outages. I now make the trip 4 to 6 times a year for long weekends.

ENJOY

As Ben Stiller said in Starsky and Hutch:

DO IT !

All night fun for 50 bucks? Yea, it can be found, but you'll need to hose her down with a good flea dip first.

Unlisted places with awesome girls who are cheap? RBC 100 (and several others) is the KING of the low end (cost wise) places. Without Spanish, a cast iron stomach, and a can of bug spray for the cama/bed you might be surprised.

Berk.....
