La Amistad, classy place, great food, no chicas on site but allowed to visit, lots of guys swear by this place, but I say NO for first timers, it's boring, when you're here check it out and it's a good choice for more experienced guys.

Many of the other places are nice, but for a first timer it should be either of them, HDR and SL. I mean, you don't want a snooze fest and return to the states saying "but they had great food!!!"
Really?
Boring and a snooze fest?
I've never been bored at La Amistad and its sister hotel the Castillo. Actually, I've rarely been bored in San Jose (except back in the day when I was a 'good boy' and stayed at the Sleep Inn).
The bar at La Amistad is a great place to sit and network with other gringos, without a lot of extraneous bullshit, before you go chica hunting. The bar at the Castillo is also.
And since a person would be foolish to stay either place without the all-inclusive, that $10 more means your drinks are included.
And if there isn't anyone to chat with, then you sack up and head out and find something to un-bore you. Which you are going to take to your room anyway.
My point is this, La is a fabulous choice for many old pros who know their way around, but for a first timer since there are no parading chicas like HDR or SL, you have to go to either of these venues to participate in the party. They are coming to experience as much craziness as possible.
Keep in mind most connoisseurs of places like La are usually 40's and up, probably 50's and up, most of them, and it's a classy elegant place but quiet, and many old pros prefer that, but I still say first time visitors, especially if they're young, should go for the wild n crazy atmosphere of HDR or SL with the parading chicas.
Tommy himself responded to my post with " Thanks that is super helpful. I feel like what I need right about now is to see and have as crazy a time as i can manage."
My preference for a first timer is the mind blowing HDR, and if they don't know how to get around, it's work to seek out the various mp's, why not pick the low hanging fruit? if they've been running around all day and have had enough at night, they can hang in the lobby, pick a winner and elevator up to ecstasy without fighting taxis and headaches at night.
If HDR does collapse one day in the future, they can brag "I was there!!!"
Now many of the "older gentlemen" who come here don't care for the loud, raucous atmosphere of HDR, and the quieter classier places make good choices, but first timers should get their minds blown, then check out the other places to see if they want a more subdued atmosphere on later visits.
I'm still a grand central station guy, I love staying at HDR in spite of the loudness and thug-o-rama hood, I've been to the other places and yes, they are classier and quieter, but newbies generally don't want that unless they too are, ahem, "mature". I've also met numerous guys at the HDR and made friends and went out galavanting, so that option is there.
If you want quieter classier surroundings but still numerous chica options at night without leaving the hotel and advice from older pros, SL is the choice, but I will still say a newbie, especially if they are early 40's or younger will find the non chica hotels boring.
I hate to break it to you, but some of these young guys find us boring as well...
