Yea, but the good news is they are always politically correcting us so we know how to act properly as to never offend anyone when we're eventually fighting off street dogs as we rummage through trash for food like in Venezuela... :x :x :x

I like to pay the girls with Colones. When I ask them how much they charge for their companionship they usually start with "Cien." (I'm talking about the 9.5s and 10s IMHO). I counter-offer 40000 Colones. I have yet to have a girl barter for more than 50,000 Colones...and in the current exchange, that is approximately $87 USD. An instant savings of $13. Not a big deal, but it adds up over the 4 trips I've made this year.

I know... I'm ruining it for everyone by paying that price. Blah, blah. Shut up already, :D

I always pay in colones.
My answer is that I live here and don't have any dollars.
(My rent is the only expenses that is paid in dollars )
There is at least a ten percent savings using colones. $ 10 gets you over 5 mil in colones, and 5 mil colones is
less than $9

Right now it's a very slow time, if you're here any time soon you can get away with 35k colones, lol. :D

I live here and am retired on soc sec and work part time via internet in my home, my extra income varies depending on the time of the year, right now it's been slow and girls I used to pay $80 for I'm offering $60 and even less down to $50 and getting away with it.

I've been so successful at this I've been engaging new strange and two of my old regulars are also feeling the pinch, they both asked where have I been, I told them I'm tight until November and am paying only $60, both said no problemo, lol.

1: Costa Rica is in the middle of a financial crisis!

2: Costa Rica is a country in the mist of a strike by something like 28 different unions, mostly public service unions.

3: Several of the strikes by individual unions have now been declared illegal.

4: Yesterday two major things took place:
a: The striking unions held a major demonstration with an estimated 1,000,000 protesters in the streets (Paseo Colon and Ave 2).
b: The national Bank sold 31.15 million dollars to try to stabilize the dropping colon.

Did either work?? The strikers just made even more of the non-strikers mad by bringing traffic to a virtual standstill in San Jose!! AND, so far today the colon has LOST another two points to the dollar!! Oh, and the colon had actually risen the first 2 days of the week BEFORE the National bank sold 31 million!!

600 by December, you heard it here first...

There's only so much coffee, pineapples, putas, call centers and tourists can pay for... :!:

From talking to educated intelligent accomplished Ticos that I know, many work 50 plus hours a week, 6 day weeks to get ahead, the government goons and union mooches receive massive amounts of colones not only for the minimal work they do, but also to pile up for a luxurious retirement. :o

Many of the paychecks these corrupt crooks receive are equal to or better than their fleecing USA counterparts mooch, fattttt money for Costa Rica... :!: 8)

In lieu of all the hardworking Ticos/Ticas struggling through the stunning explosion of inflation, cost of just basic staples, and the hindrance to opportunity and advancement curtly dished out by a corrupt socialist democracy, the sheer audacity of their bullying tactics to hold onto and increase their ill gotten gains is nothing less than deplorable... :x

The strike is a major pain in the ass for non government employees. The teachers are all on strike and are anticipating another month with no school for the K*ds. They are all being paid while on strike yet the K*ds are going to be expected to pass their exams in October to make it to the next grade. All the private businesses that help the schools provide meals and other support are out of luck and are not making money while the strike is going on. Our bus driver for one of the K*ds is paid 7000 colones per week to drive him back and forth to school. Even though there is no school we are still expected to pay the bus driver for the week. Not only are we stuck having to pay him while the K*ds are on break he gets a paycheck for nothing while they are on strike. He was informed yesterday that we would not be paying for services not rendered and if he did not like it he was welcome to find another student to fill the seat vacated by our student.

We are now on strike too.

If it were not so sad (for the majority of the people) it would be almost laughable!!

But then, as I set here in my relative easy and nice life here in Cost Rica watching the idiotic hate, graft, stupidity, win at all cost, often out right criminal things going on in the "good old USA" I cannot help but wonder how much longer the USA will continue to exist as we know it! I do know (I hear it from people from many different parts of the world) that the USA is no longer looked up to as the leader of the civilized world, is no longer the place where everyone wants to move to, is no longer admired for its ability to solve its problems in a democratic manor!

Socialism has never worked in any country for more than a few years. Sadly it is destroying this country (Costa Rica) and if not careful, will destroy the USA. It sounds good but the "few" cannot, and will not, pay for the total indefinitely! Especially when, as it seems is always the case, the leaders try to take the majority of the funds for themselves!

When you destroy the will to achieve, advance, and/or improve your life, you destroy all productivity and all chance for advancement as a society! There will always be the "have" and the "have nots"! It is just a matter of whether you want the "have nots" to be 10 to 20% or 95%!! In an ideal world even the 10-20% is too high, but there is no "ideal world" and I personally doubt there ever will be!!

I love both countries, but as things stand right now I am really very glad I do not have a lot of years left (to have to watch the down fall of both!)

I will end this tirade with what has recently become my favorite phrase- "HATE IS A TERRIBLE THING"!!

If you live in country and receive USD deposits, more bang for your buck. Someone said the published websites do not give you the same exchange rate but BCR has a usd to CRC of 589.5 for their purchase rate on their website; that's on par with the published website exchange rates. Who said what again?

I think you are the one who needs to look again!! The bank rate as stated for BCR at closing today on their web site is:
$US purchase (which means what they sale colones for in exchange for dollars) is 576.5 They are purchasing dollars!!
$US sale (which is what they sale dollars for in exchange for colones) is 589.5 They are selling dollars!!!!

BCCR (the national bank) put $31,000,000 into the system last week which was/is suppose to stabilize the rate and keep the colon from going down! This has worked (in the short term) for the past few years. This time it has not! It has dropped almost (the exchange rate for buying colones with dollars has gone up) 10 points in just over a week!!

Oh, and the EX exchange rate as of this afternoon for buying colones with dollars is 580.16 which is actually less than 4 points more than what you can actually get here in CR (depending on the bank) today if you are exchanging dollars for colones!! This is the lowest difference I have seen in a long time!! Also, when I say "depending on the bank" that is because there are 14 different banks, each setting their own rate, and a total of over 20 other institutions where you can exchange money. All of the rates vary from 574 to 578 except for Global exchange (the rip-off place at the airport) which is 499.77!!

If you do not believe what I have posted is correct, go to BCR first thing in the morning and try to get 589.5 colones for your dollar!! Good luck!! WHO SAID WHAT AGAIN????

Not sure just what your problem is with me! YOU are the one who came on here with the smart ass attitude! And even so, I was just trying to set the facts straight so others would not be confused!. The way the banks list the rates can be confusing especially when translated to English! Since your last sentence on your original post was "a little much", I just decided to repeat is as a joke!! Guess I hit your sensitive spot too hard!!
