With Spirit you should have plenty of time to make your connecting flight coming down. They never leave on time. I had two guys fly yesterday from Atlanta here. Their connecting flight was delayed 5 hours in Lauderdale. The group here in San Jose trying to return to the states may have had a bit of a problem though, it was over five hours late leaving after having to wait on the plane. None of them made a connecting flight in Lauderdale. Spirit deals with this by refunding your connecting flight leg of the trip. They do not put you in a hotel. You are on standby as to when they can put you on their next plane to your destination. That can be days if their flights are sold out. That flight savings becomes a last minute purchase on another airline. Thing is it happens more frequently than not in flying with them. I'd take a bus down through central America before I'll ever get on another one of their planes. It is no secret they are rated the worst airline for customer service. Pay the extra and fly anyone else.
Pops, I have to disagree with you about Spirit. I have flown on Spirit about 20 trips through FLL to Medellin and San Jose. Only three flights of those approximately 40 were delayed more than a few minutes, many departed early. One delay was not Spirit's fault - there was another airline's plane disabled on the runway in MDE. When the other delayed flights arrived in FLL, one flight the passengers going to Orlando were transported on vans (it was late at night); the other one we were booked on the first flight leaving the next morning - confirmed seats, no standby. That was in January of this year. Maybe they used to put the people on standby, but that was not my experience. I did have a problem with them not paying for a hotel. The flight arrived in FLL an hour and 15 minutes before the connecting flight departed. There was no way to make that connection because of waiting for an empty gate, the slow baggage handling in FLL, and a long line at the TSA screening. They said because there was more than one hour between the flights, they would not provide any lodging or meals. I have Global Entry, but that doesn't help with getting your bags, or with TSA screening when flying Spirit.
