Last week I stopped into Pops ice cream on Avenida Central near Teatro National for a little treat. What transpired blew me away........ There were three people ahead of me in line to order. When the first person seemed to be at the counter for quite some time I looked to see what was going on. Well the guy was paying for his 800 col. ice cream cone WITH A CREDIT CARD. So the chica behind the counter had to check everything including his cedula and write down the numbers on his slip. No wonder it took a while. When the SAME THING happened to the next 2 customers I found it hard to believe. Doesn't anyone have CASH in this Country?

Most likely they were not using a credit card but rather a debit card. Government agencies and many private business now pay their employees by direct deposit to avoid the necessity of waiting in a long bank line to cash the check and reduce the chance of being robbed after leaving the bank.

It is a common sight to see a Tico pay for a very small purchase at a mercado or at a fast food place with a debit card. The less cash you carry the less chance of losing it to a ladron.

The other point being made here is, though folks increasingly using debit cards for purchases (like in the U.S.), merchants are ill-equipped to accept them (unlike the U.S.).

What makes you say that? Just as credit cards have become widely accepted so have debit cards. Even some of stalls at the Central Market accept cards and because they do you usually can negotiate a discount for cash.

I based that quote on Brother Vegas Bob's observation that all manner of paperwork had to be done--in the US, it's swipe the card, sign the screen (if over $25) and fly. They now have even easier methods. The question wasn't about acceptance, but the changes folks have to go through to get a card accepted.

POPS would seem to be an unusual case. Most places I use either a credit or debit card, in CR, request nothing other then my signature. The one constant exception is the Mas x Menos group who always want to see my cedula or drivers license. They do not write anything down just compare the name and check my picture. Takes no time at all.

The major diffidence I find is that when I lived in South Florida I could always sign for an amount more then my purchase and get the difference in cash. Because of that I rarely ever used an ATM there and most markets did away with there check cashing ID card.

Ticos love their debit cards, they never carry cash out of fear of being robbed or losing it. Annoying as f uck.
