Thought I would bring this up and see if anyone had any comments one way or the other...
Interesting how in Costa Rica many of the venues feature almost exclusively female bartenders - including the Del Rey, Key Largo, Sportsmens, Zona Blue, New York Bar, etc. The only exceptions to this seem to be the strip clubs.
OTOH - in Rio, bartenders in Help and the termas are pretty much exclusively male. Don't know about other venues around the world, but I'd be curious to find out.
Any theories as to why it has become such a female-dominated trade in the monger venues in CR, and not so much elsewhere (or at least in Rio)?
GR,
My theory is not clearly thought out, but it goes something along those lines:
In Costa Rica, the reality is that the prostitutes are not the best looking honey-bunnies in the world (4-7.5's on average). Being a really hot bartender makes you all the more enticing among the crowd of blah-looking prostitutes and, as a result, the bartenders get better tips for looking so much better than everything out on the market, so to speak. Because they look so much better than what's on "the other side of the bar," there's a certain novelty and mystique to them that drives men crazy. They get very large tips on a usual basis, and the extra attention, cash and gifts are occupational perks to being a cute bartender in CR Gulch.
Not so in Rio...
Even if a bartender there were a drop-dead, absolute-10, she still would just seem like just another face in the crowd, where the vast majority of the honey-bunnies in most of the popular places (i.e. Centaurus, 4x4, Solarium, etc.) easily fall in the range of 8-10's (no question about this... the hottest girl in Del Rey on any given night will only seem like a high 7 AT BEST at Centaurus). The novelty of being beautiful behind the bar would be non-existent in Brazil as it is in Costa Rica, simply because all the prostitute kittens you can actually bang on a whim are just as hot as anything you've ever seen. That being said, you won't get the big tips, the extra attention, the "diva" status that you would otherwise get by bartending in places such as Del Rey or Key Largo. There's no novelty and thus no financial "umpfh" by being cute behind the bar in Rio... It just doesn't work that way there.
There's more to this thought, and I'm sure I could have expressed this thought out better, but this will do for now... I'm trying to keep off the board!!
