Hey guys, I am seeking information about Limon. What is the best way to get there from SJ? I was thinking about taking a Carribean bus to Limon, but want to know how long that ride is. I plan to do some fishing there, and am seeking Tarpon and Snook. Do you guys know any decent places to stay in Limon? Do any of you guys have any fishing experience in Limon? What about the chicas in Limon? Is the chicas scene better in Limon than Quepos? Any info you guys can share will be greatly appreciated

Fishing-wise, you aren't going to find tarpon fishing in Limon (I don't think you'll find snook either).

The epicenter of world-class tarpon fishing is the Barra del Colorado just below Nicaragua (and there's awesome snook fishing too, but more on that later), but it's a remote area and you go there to fish. Period.

To get there, you can take a bus through Guapiles to Cariari Pococi, then change buses and take the bus to the end of the road ("Puerto Lindo"), then take the bus boat to the Barra - $25 and all day. Or you can fly (SANSA) - which is what our guests do.

There's also tarpon fishing down by the Panamanian border, but it is nothing like up north.

The tarpon population in the Barra del Colorado is unbelievable. Huge fish (190 is average and over 200 aren't rare) and a resident, non-migratory population (you can catch big ones all year long). Most people see 8-10 strikes in the morning or afternoon and land about

Snook fishing is a little harder. Locals use nets or surfcast, but you can catch them in the lagoons and canals off the river too.

As far as chicas, I've found a lot of semi-pros on Badoo and Tinder in Limon and Guapiles. Unfortunately, when I'm in the Barra, it's actually easier to hop to San Jose when there's a break and enjoy the city.

I wanted my (apparently) ex-novia to show me Limon, but since she disappeared...

You can take the bus but for a little more comfort use Interbus Shuttle. About $50.00. Caribe Fun Tours also offers shuttles with wifi!

I would re-consider the destination, but if you're dead set on Limon, be careful because it's probably the most dangerous place in Costa Rica, day or night. They seem to target the cruise tourists (do the cruises stop there again? they were talking about suspending them due to crime).

Yes the cruise ships do port there. That's how I first saw the place. My interest is fishing. And I met some cool fisherman while I was there. I fish CR. Started hand line fishing in Heradura, then Jaco inshore, the los stenos, off shore, and then quepos, inshore panga fishing. I have been to domical as well. Finally landed in Mal Pais, and due to the cheap rates, and good fishing, I keep going back. But Limon offered tarpon and snook fishing which is really not available on the west coast. thanks for the heads up about Limon.
Cheers.
Happy New Year

Hey Patron,

I can vouch for the Rio Colorado, best Tarpon Fishing anywhere. And as you know I lived in Pinellas county Florida for 20 years and had good Tarpon fishing every Summer. I have also been to Boca Grande Pass in May (what Gringos say is world class Tarpon fishing). I stayed at Rio Colorado Lodge for 3 days about 10 years ago and we were jumping 20-30 day every day and landed no less than 5 per day. I hear the Silver King Lodge is just as good. I stuck to the tarpon but a couple of the fellas went up the river a ways and came back with a few Snook (not Common Snook like in Florida, they were Fat Snook which are a slightly smaller species). They brought them back and the bartender at the lodge made Ceviche out of it. The first and best Ceviche I have had to this day. I highly recommend. As stated above there are no girls there for play, but the host of the lodge said you can bring your girl from SJ if you want at no additional charge (unless they are going to fish too). But he warned us that if we leave them there while we went fishing he was going to phuck them...I am pretty sure he meant it.

We took one of those small Buddy Holly planes there from SJ, very reasonable rate and beautiful view the whole way there. Landed on a dirt runway in the rain, that was dicey, but I am still here.

Sorry I could not join you for this trip.

Our neighbor, Rio Colorado, has fallen on hard times, there's no comparison any more.

Bear in mind I manage another Lodge (which is the top-rated Lodge). This is my personal opinion.

Rio Colorado Lodge has been dying for years. The lodge itself is in terrible shape. They are down to two operating boats - the rest are waterlogged (fiberglass over plywood construction).

Another thing that hurt it was the chica policy. Yes, they (he) allows guys to bring their chicas from San Jose. Rumor is, while the guys are fishing, he's phucking the chicas. Problem is, that reduces your clientele to mongers - serious fishermen and guys who bring their wives and so on aren't amused. It's one thing at a big resort (say Crocs), its another thing in a small 10 room lodge.

On top of that, the locals aren't amused by it. There is no prostitution in the Barra - the area is very much Seventh Day Adventist (not Catholic) and since it's a small village, everyone knows everyone's business.
