Absolutely 100% the worst hangover I ever experienced was a night of pounding Imperials. It totally ruined my second trip to CR. I got hammered at Nashville South, walked over to the Monkey Bar, finished what I started. Next thing I knew I woke up in some putas apartment. She was cool. She made me breakfast, let me sleep, didn't rob me (would have been too easy) and basically TRIED to nurse me back to health. She was a part timer. Also worked part time for the CR Red Cross. I actually thought I had brain damage! Didn't really recover for about 3 days.

No… After 20+ years in the brewing business (4 GABF medals), I can guarantee you it is not the water “impurities” causing your hangovers. In the brewing process the liquids (called sweet wort at that time) are boiled for a period of time that would kill ANY impurities in the water that could possibly make you ill. In the next stage of the process the liquids are chilled and yeast is added. At this stage cleanliness and sterility of tanks and hoses is better than most hospitals. You have to be sterile or your beer does not ferment properly and will rot. The same can be said of the bottling process, if it is not sterile, you will know the second you open the bottle and/or taste the product.

Your hangover was caused by probably one or a combination of the following things:
1) Altitude, SJ is at about 4000’ the effects of alcohol are much greater due to blood pressure, thin air and dehydration due to dry air.
2) Jet Lag, how long did you sit in a dry plane before you started drinking? Did you drink on that plane?
3) Food consumed, had you eaten?, your “normal foods”?
4) Lack of sleep and extra “physical activity”… nuff said.
5) Higher ABV (alcohol by volume) of Imperial… This isn’t Bud or Old Style… Imperial is about 5.3% as opposed to standard 4% or lower (depending on your state). Over 7-8 beers and combined with the altitude change this will give you a wicked hangover the next morning. Just ask Xman :D .

I have heard the bad water/beer/booze excuse so many times up at Tahoe (5000’) that I have to just laugh…dam tourists  …

Interesting. I don't know exactly what it is but I know it isn't good to me. I've found the same with most, but not all, expats who live here. I'm not drinking these days but was drinking Heinekin when last I was drinking.

This is a simple one.
Drink too much booze, you get a hank over.
Specially on an empty gut.

Mendo...

Thanks so much for the data you provided... I for one, knowing your knowledgeable background, accept it as expert testimony.

Although my favorite foreign beer is Presidente, I've always enjoyed a really cold canned Imperial. The bottled one gets warm too quick for my taste...

I was thinking however, isn't Imperial available in the Duty Free at the airport? Since pretty much the only booze I get is a few bottles of the Centenario XX Year Old Fundación, I've never really looked to see if Imperial is available...

That would make it much easier (and possibly cheaper) to bring a couple of six packs back to the US.

Have you seen it there?

And be well my friend... (Say Hi to MO, will you)

I see we have some Presidente fans. Love it. Muff, maybe you are correct about the bottle. I'll try cans of the Imperial next time.

DP1...

I find that the cans get cold a lot faster and hold the low temperature longer than bottles do.

I was forst introduced to Presidente beer while I was visiting Northeastern Spain. Fell in love with it.

Ditto on BEVMOs. They all have 6 packs and 12 packs and most Alberstons carry it as well.

It's available in Atlanta too. There is a local tapas restaurant called Pura Vida , that has all your CR beer favorites and makes a kickass mojito to go with the best tapas in town. I can buy it retail at the international farmer's market.

I do not think it is available in CR. In fact, I am sure of it. However, I will be drinking a tall Presidente in about 72 hours from now in Cartago. Just chillin' and checking out the central valley at night. Love it. Life doesn't get much better. Ahh..can't wait.
