It won't change much for it, since there are other airlines to choose from. I nearly booked a flight to CR at the end of the month with Spirit, til I did reviews of the airline and noticed their excessive fee policy on just about everything, including blankets, pillows and what not. So I finally booked it on AA instead, which gave slightly lower fees than Spirit for the trip. Just AA used to be on Orbitz.com,but due to disputes, they were no longer listed there, but I found it though other searches to find ideal pricing.

As the article stated nothing is going to change so what is the point of following the students example?

Do not think for a second that this incident will change Ryanair's fee policy. Ryanair, like Spirit, is what it says it is: An airline that sells dirt cheap airfares and charges fees for everything beyond the seat. Customers can mutiny all they want, but it's all sound and fury signifying nothing. This is Ryanair's business model, and it's not changing. No, for consumers put off by all the fees and gimmicks, there's a far simpler and more effective method of protest: Fly a different airline.

Additionally the penalties in the U.S. are severe for failing to follow instructions of the flight crew so besides wasting your time you also are going to be out some $ at the very least.
