This is directed to those of you lucky enough to live in Costa Rica. I have a friend who will be going down for a 3 month Spanish course beginning in May. He will be living with a Spanish couple in their home. They do not have internet service.

What is the normal cost of setting up a plain old dial-up ISP connection ? And how much a month would the service be ? Could he have the service for three months or would he have to sign up for a full year ?

Thanks for any advice you are able to provide.

Pura vida

There are many Internet Cafes available in SJO area.

Also GREAT excuse to leave the family at night if one doesn't want them to know WHERE you are learning your Spanish at nite !!!

Did I hear someone say...

" Cien? lo siento, quiero compania solomente para una noche, no por un semana !"

It's not hard to set up a racsa account, if you have the right documents and some money. I think it's around 15$ a month, and you don't have to sign any long term contracts. Best to take somebody who speaks Spanish with you, though, in case you aren't fluent.

Dial up service in CR is quite different than that in the states. It is provided by RACSA (the only provider in the country) and uses ICE phone lines.

There is as far as I know no monthly fee such as there is when you connect via cable modem however there is no unlimited service with dial up so you are billed for every minute which can get expensive.

There are no monthly plans or yearly plans you only pay for what you use. If you connect by cable the cost is monthly and depends on the speed you choose and 1/2 goes to the cable company and 1/2 to RACSA.

If your friend is satisfied with dial up getting a racsa internet card would be an option. You can buy one good for 15 hours for 5-6 mil colones. You don't have to setup an account or anything. I used this system for awhile and I got connected every time and hardly ever got bumped off.
