I'd like to start some feedback on fishing boats. One of the pastimes is billfishing when not mongering and i thought it may be helpful to the guys to have some intelligence on the good boats. Interested in Quepos at the moment but go to several of the CR hotspots.

HiTec Charters. Gone out with them 6X. They catch fish; not a boat ride!!
24' to 30' pangas and priced from $400 to $600 per day per boat; not per person.
If you can get Gerry (tico capt.) he is the best!!! Last trip out with them (by myself) 14 sails on and 9 releases; one pushing the 180 lb mark.
If you don't believe me you can see the pic at the Sportsmans Lodge in the glass case 8)
Owners name is John. Can't find the ph # but they are on the net :D

Pax,
Sluthog

In the Golfito area, John Olson's Sportfishing Unlimited is a good'n. 28' center consoles w/ twin ob.

Farther North of Quepos, I'd recommend the Gamefisher II. Owner Richard Chellimi runs the boat some days, Capt Junior Busto runs it some other days. They run out of Playa Flamingo, Playa Carrillo or Playa Samara, depending on the season. It's a 31' Palm Beach, twin screws. Top notch captain and crew. I've fished with them several times, never been skunked. Our best day was 16 sails, 3 blue marlin, 1 striped marlin, plus a shitload of dorado, tuna, and a couple wahoo's to boot. They fish many tournaments, and have won many of them. If you're in the Northern Guanacaste area, I highly recommend them.
Tight lines,
Mikey-B

I have a buddy in Drake Bay. He has a small B&B and a decent charter boat. Everytime I have fished with him (maybe 20) we have slayed them. Check out www.hotelojala.com His name is El Gato. Or, Fred in gringonese. His phone # 380-4763.
HIGHLY RECCOMENDED.

I recommend www.captaintoms.com out of Los Suenos. We have fished with him 3 times catching a boat load everytime...best day was 23 raised 21 to the boat. Was his boat record for a while.

I work with a friend who has two boats down here: Hoo's Up! and Hoo's your Daddy! Captain Dana is the owner and I saw him start with a 24' center console. He always gets on the fish and is a cool guy to go out with as are all his people. I like working with the little guy who still is out there everyday. The above mentioned businesses, Captain Tom's and Costa Rica Dreams both have good reputations also. I haven't heard anything negative about either. They both bring in tons of fish. I'm taking over a tourist info center in Jaco on March 1st. I will have a daily surf report and am working on a source to have a regular fishing report. When I get that going, if you guys are interested, maybe I'll post a weekly fishing report.

Will do my best as quickly as possible... Trying to make that connection before I relaunch the website. I will start with the Jaco area, and will try to make some new connections and possibly go country wide.

CRaider:

For fishing, I'd pretty much second Sluthog's earlier endorsement of Hi Tec Charters out of Quepos ("pretty much" because my luck with them wasn't nearly as good as his). But the owner, John, did hook me up with some real nice folks on a charter, which I greatly appreciated (as I was travelling solo). Another charter company I talked with down there was called Blu Fin, if memory serves. It sounded like their boats had done pretty well recently, but they were unable to get me on an open load trip (and were more expensive to boot). One thing in their favor was the young women booking their trips were cute ;-) These two companies are just down the street from each other in Quepos.

As far as hotels go, in my experience, there are precious few hotels located directly on the beach, but the road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio is almost litterally lined on both sides with hotels. I would recommend the place I stayed, the Mono Azul. No view, but pretty large, clean comfortable rooms wtih AC for not much money. I'd also refer you to the thread titled "Manuel Antonio mid-price hotels" earlier in this section. As pointed out in this thread, buses (and taxis) run frequently between Quepos and M.A. (if you are carless).

Cheers and have fun.

All these links are live and up-to-date. Don't know if it's fishing season or not--as a Pisces myself I try to avoid such things as hooks and whatnot but for those enamored...
