Want to get away from Del Rey / KeyLargo / p4p scene and hang out in a cool bar with one of my regular chicas . . . where atmosphere will be upbeat and good for her to relax, drink, talk, perhaps dance but not necessary etc. Where's a good place or two? Thx

Disco Castro is pretty good, not too far away, very local. You can go upstairs to the bar, or stay downstairs at the floor bar and dance floor. Many a tables to sit at. Of course, there are many other places to go to, but I am not so familiar with all of them.

Amen to the two mentioned. You also might like Bar OLE which is before San Pedro mall coming from downtown on the right hand side on the lateral side street. Lots of ticos and a few gringos occasionally. THere also is a new club around the corner from there that I cant remember the name...dark red color building that on the weekend is packed and very popular to the younger crowd. Dont know any other particulars since...I feel to old for the place  ...

I like the Jazz Cafe too and would definitely take the type of girls I go out with in the US there, but if you're talking about taking your working girl "novia" out of the gulch I don't think it is the type of place that she'd appreciate as much as I do. If we're talking about very young (eg 18-22 yo) or maybe slightly older and most likely poorly educated, then I think the type of "culture" they'd be most likely to appreciate would be places where drinking, partying and dancing to more youth oriented music rather than a jazz club. For the former type places Disco Castro would certainly apply, but what's wrong with the old standbys at El Pueblo (try Club Ebony 56, one of many bars there). Since all these girls are "only working to raise money for their college tuition", they might have a good time with fellow coeds at one of the student bars at Calle Amargura near UCR (try Terra U). If you can handle the techno music that some young folk are listening to these days try Club Vertigo in Centro Colon, http://www.vertigocr.com. Just east of downtown there is the longstanding Boca Del Monte, a SJ institution. Finally, there's also a very active club on the below ground level of the San Pedro Mall (whose name escapes me at the moment) which always seems to be jumping with others in your "novia's" age bracket.

Yes basically its a working girl novia kind of thing and just want to get some more neutral ground to hang in from time to time with them. Thanks for the input.

While many of the chicas would like El Pueblo where Prolijo recommends, I dont think most guys here would really like it there that much...well, especially the majority who are in the 40s and 50s. It has really gotten raucous there in the past 4 years I have been here...and while worth doing once to see it, I dont think it is an easy place to connect at...though there are a couple restaurants there like Lukas and Papa Pez that are nice options for dining. There is also a lot more crime and shootings that have gone on there in recent couple years...so I just dont feel very secure there any more. And if I am paying, she should go where I want to go or feel comfortable. Gotta control the situation you know...or they will control YOU.

TMan,
Your points are well taken. I still remember back to the Infinito days which was already fairly raucous for my tastes. And the scene has gotten much rowdier since then. I was just trying to think of places that would be more appealing to a relatively unsophisticated working girl than the Jazz Cafe, but I guess ended up going a bit too far to the other extreme. Perhaps El Cuartel would be a better more neutral choice. The sad thing is that, unless you're one of the younger mongers here or are willing to go with the slightly more mature 30-something chicas, like it or not when you get right down to it, all we really have in common with these young women is mutual attraction (what they can do for us sexually and what we can do for them financially). Even when we're closer in age, there are usually wide cultural and educational gaps between us. We may like them personality-wise, but we really don't have many interests in common.

Couldnt agree with you more Prolijo. I am finally to the point in life where i let the 20 somethings have their own places to hang without my participation :? . And I also agree that even knowing Spanish, I havent much to talk about to the 20 somethings...so I probably wont "date" them. Just once in a while get a massage and flirtation hour in here and there. I do think most guys that seriously want a dating relationship here have no problem finding nice attractive women in their 30s and 40s for a more mature and fulfilling relationship if they want to. I am still VERY happy with my 40+ Colombiana  ...

So absolutely true! This is why I believe have your 1 to 2 hours of fun with the youngsters but don't try to make something that can very rarely be true out of this, just let that go for what it is a great time & if you want a real nice real relationship which is very easy to find look for some true lady that works outside the gulch they are easy to find & many can be very educated so you have much more in common to move into something much deeper if that is what one is looking for.

I was so proud of one American around 48 yrs old on my recent trip. Good looking vibrant in shape guy. He found a real GEM!!! Tica 35yrs old but let me tell you she was super hot all the way around never married & no little ones! She was working 2 real jobs & he met her at her part time job booking a trip. Well he had a problem because he was staying at HDR & she was not really up to speed on what really goes on in depth there. She came over to visit him & saw HDR in all its Glory & really was mad at him. He had many dates with her but no sex. She is a little on the religious side. He was desperate asking me advice as she was very upset in his room. Being the cool guy he was he also had a Colombiana in tow that she did not know about. This guy was keeping everything open encase she bolted. Don't know how it all ended but I hope he did not lose her she was a rare real find!

There are many out there like her give it your best shot guys if you are looking for something like this as what do you have to lose. CR is a place you should be polite but bold & sure of yourself, all they can say is NO?

Tman, Prolijo, Zippy...I totally concur. Back in the late nineties, I liked a few places in El Pueblo, especially Infinito. They had three areas with a different type of music in each. Ever since Club Infinito closed in 2000 or 2001, I really haven't enjoyed going there. I can't take the techno, 'dance', and rap/hiphop crap.
(I've always liked dining at Lukas, although sometimes it can get a little loud due to its close proximity to some of the clubs).

so sounds like a decent list of possible places would be

Bar Ole
Disco Castro (I assume it gets going later on in the night)
Jazz Cafe (on the mature/cultured side)
Boca Del Monte- bar/restaurant?
Club Vertigo (I assume later in the night)
El Cuartel - club?
Club Ebony 56 @ El Pueblo (but be prepared to deal w/scene)
Not sure what Skybox is, sounds like a lounge in a hotel.

Thanks
