If you plan to go to Jaco, Quepos/Manuel Antonio or further south along the Pacific coast, you need to be aware of the delays associated with the repairs on the Tarcoles Bridge.
Officials indicate that the repairs will take up to a year to complete and are "urgent and cannot be postponed".
1st phase of the work started August 18 and will continue until November, causing traffic to be restricted to one lane. 2nd phase will have 2 lanes but with complete closure of the road at night
My sources indicate that it is currently taking 3.5-4 hours to go from SJO to Jaco.

Wow this could hurt the Cocal business and all the churn and burn chicas that drive over there From San Jose to make big bucks and return home. Looking at googlemaps there is no way of avoiding this bridge on the drive to Jaco.

Early September my driver only had a 20 minute wait until our lane was open and going back to the airport was early in the morning before the construction crews started lane closures for that day.

Today it took me an extra 25 minutes. But there was very little traffic from San Jose so it was a quick trip. I will confirm that it can take 2 plus hours on occasion so plan well. I arrived at the bridge today around 4:45p going to Jaco.
