Guys;
Like Bilko, Dave and Johnny come latley, I was able to retire early abiet it the hard way. Sufferd a small stroke at 57 and was told by docs that if I didn't sell my company (which I co-owned with 2 others), I would be dead in 6 months. Unbeknownst to me, that was my lucky day.
After recovery, I met with the partners who offered to buy me out. I negotiated a goodly amount and had them pay me over 15 years. I even had them include heath insurance. I am still on the books and receive a weekly paycheck which allows me to continue paying into the 401K which I am fully vested in.
The States was too expensive on my new weekly salary, hence Costa Rica is where I live and where I've invested in real estate leaving me with property but no monthly mortgage. I travel to the states a couple times a year and have adapted rather well. I don't consider it a third world country and I have every comfort here that I enjoyed in the US. When the 15 years are up, I'll collect maxium social and dip into the 401K when necessary.
LVSteve

Dwayne2864,

The Navy has a Limited Duty Officer program where you are given a temporary commision which becomes permanent when you accept O-3. I declined it so that I could retire with exactly 20 years in day for day. My wife got out before retirement mainly due to them wanting to send her to Guam for the last four years. Also, we had two, two year olds and we both just wanted to stay home and raise them. I have been to Sea World, Zoo, Disneyland, Universal Studios, etc more than probably 100 men combined. :D :D It has been a great 14 years and continues to get better.

Your plan is laid out well and a model for many younger ones here.

Have a Geat Day,

Dave

Dave,

I believe it was Louis Pasteur who said "Luck favors the prepared mind".

Just remember, the only way to make a Pilot a millionaire is to give him 2 million to start out with.....
