Yes, good move. There are a handful of "explorers" around who probably could find their way around on a first trip, but for the vast majority of mortal mongers, it's probably a good idea to start out at "Mansion" or hook-up with a reasonably competent vet or guide. I'm not sure who is in charge at the Mansion/Castillo now, but in years gone by, a guy by the name of Boyd, a member of the Management Team," took hotel guests on P4P tours of the city. I honestly don't know if that service is still offered at MM. At any rate, you will undoubtedly meet some fellow guests who are Medellin vets, and who can be a source of information and advice. As you get your feet wet, you will learn to find your way around, and perhaps graduate to a furnished apartment on subsequent trips. Have fun!
